Natural Ways to Cure Insomnia: Tips

As stated, if you want to know how to cure insomnia naturally and without medication, you're going to need to change your lifestyle, your sleep habits, and how you approach sleep. A lot of people who suffer from insomnia do work in their bed. They bring their work home with them, and then when they should be relaxing, sit in bed and find themselves stressed as they work to meet a looming deadline. Students suffer from this same issue, as many children and young adults do their homework in their bed. Lots of people also use the computer in their bed, even if its only for recreation. All of these things are bad habits which need to be changed immediately. Your bed should be your sanctuary: the only thing you should associate with it is sleep. Part of the reason you may be suffering from insomnia is because you no longer associate your bed with sleep: instead, you see it as just another piece of furniture, and may even associate it with stress of some kind. This is maybe the most important of natural ways to cure insomnia.

You also need to be going to bed at the same time every night. If you're not going to bed at the same time, your mind and body are not going to have any idea when they are supposed to be sleeping. There is nothing programmed into your body to say "Now is the time to sleep," if you're going to bed at different times, all around the clock.

Stop drinking caffeine (coffee, tea, cola) before you go to bed. No smoking, no tobacco, no sugar, no chocolate. Instead, trade your beverage for a glass of warm milk, and if you want a midnight snack, eat some apples with peanut butter. These foods have been shown to assist the body in falling asleep. Caffeine, tobacco and sugar are all stimulants. Avoid them.

Another problem is that a lot of people are not sleeping in an environment which is conducive to sleep. TVs, radios, street lamps, sunlight, external noise: all of these things subtract from your quaity of sleep and make it harder to actually fall asleep. One of the best natural ways to wear an eye mask and ear plugs. If you work the night shift, it's especially important that you have dark curtains over your window, blocking out any outside light. The mind associates darkness with sleep. Put yourself in an environment where you it's dark and quiet.

Get into a habit. Do the same thing just before you go to bed every night. This will tell your body, "It's time to go to bed now."
