Among the many non-toxic cleaning agents available today, two of the most versatile, effective, and safe are also common household items: white vinegar and baking soda. These useful ingredients have the benefit of being cheap, easily acquired and they can be used in a myriad of ways around the house. Below are a few examples.

All-purpose cleaner: Dilute 1 part vinegar in 1 part water and use in a spray bottle to clean counters, refrigerators, stovetops, bathroom sinks, floors, and tiles. It is especially good for hard water stains and mineral deposits.

Window washing liquid: Again, equal parts water and vinegar make an excellent window solution. Dry windows with a cloth or crunched-up newspaper.

Silver polish: Mix 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Rub the paste into the silver, rinse in warm water, and dry with a soft cloth.

Stain remover: Either treat stains with undiluted vinegar before washing or add baking soda to the laundry detergent.

Deodorizer: Sprinkle baking soda onto carpeting, let sit, then vacuum to remove unpleasant odors. Can also be sprinkled in the refrigerator, microwave, bathroom, garbage can, and anywhere else that needs freshening. Vinegar can also be used to deodorize a room-simply place a bowl of undiluted vinegar in the room overnight.

Removing burnt food: Add baking soda and hot water to loosen burnt food from the pot. Let sit overnight for very stubborn burns, or gently simmer the baking soda/water combination.

Drain cleaner: Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, then ½ cup vinegar. Let it bubble for a few minutes, then pour down a kettle of boiling water.

This is just a sampling of the many ways in which these two excellent cleaners can be used. For more ideas and resources, check out http://www.newhomemaker.com

How does natural silver polish compare with the store-bought gunk? Does it take any longer to clean the items?
