Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder found mostly among obese people. This condition causes increase in the blood sugar since it prevents the metabolism from using glucose resulting in the raised concentration of glucose in the blood. Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas does not produce the hormone insulin, which is responsible for controlling glucose levels in blood. Type- I Diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin and another type of diabetes disease, which is called type- II diabetes when the body becomes resistant to insulin. As it may cause various other health complications, it is essential to treat diabetes and you can try a few time tested home remedies to keep the disease in control.

Remedies

Macadamia Nut

Some studies show that substituting certain healthy oils, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) for some of the carbohydrates can improve blood sugar control and at the same time won't increase cholesterol levels.

Olive oil is the most noted source of MUFAs. But if you don't care for olive oil try macadamia nuts as one of the more effective natural diabetes treatments.

Asian Ginseng

Ginseng can help stabilize blood sugar levels. Take 200 mg in capsule form daily.

Flax Seed

One of nature's richest source of soluble fiber is ground flax seed. It improves the body's ability to metabolize blood sugar, making it one of the better natural diabetes treatments. Eat two tablespoons daily, mixed into a glass of water or sprinkled on your food.

Garlic

Garlic, like onions, can significantly control blood sugar levels. Eat more garlic, raw, if possible, or lightly cooked in food to help control diabetes.

Green Bean Pods

The skins of green bean pods contain substances that are related to insulin making them another great choice for natural diabetes treatments. Place about 4 cups of green bean pods and about a gallon of water and cook them until soft. Strain the pods from the liquid and drink 3 cups a day with your meals. One cup is supposedly equal to one unit of insulin.

Bitter Gourd

Bitter gourd can be eaten as a side dish or could be taken as an extract. On a daily basis, taking 5 grams, about 2 teaspoons, of powdered bitter gourd decreases blood sugar by 54%.

You can also take it as a decoction by boiling 4 ounces of chopped fresh bitter gourd in 1 pint of water in till about half the liquid has boiled off. Take it once a day.

Bilberry

Bilberry has been shown to improve the circulation of blood in the eyes therefore reducing the risk of diabetes related retinopathy. Take 80 mg of extract twice a day.

Gurmar

This herb is used as a tea to help boost insulin production. Evidence has shown that it may actually increase the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin thus putting it toward the top of the list of natural diabetes treatments.

Wild Carrot Tea

Put several blossoms in 1 cup of boiling water and steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink several cups per day.

Lose Weight

One of the most simplest of all natural diabetes treatments is just to simply lose weight. This would include a low-fat diet as well as some form of regular exercising.

Beans

It has been shown that eating foods that are high in soluble fiber, especially beans, reduces blood sugar after meals and delays the drop in blood sugar later on, maintaining blood sugar at close to desired levels. It is recommended to eat beans and bean soups.

Cinnamon

Another one one the more effective natural diabetes treatments, cinnamon contains a phytochemical that helps utilize blood sugar. Add three tablespoons of cinnamon and 2 teaspoons of baking soda to 1 quart of boiling water.

Reduce the temperature and simmer for 20 minutes, then strain the tea and stored in the refrigerator. Drink 1 quart of cinnamon water every day.

Prickly Pear

This soluble fiber has been shown to slow the absorption of glucose from the intestines and to improve the effectiveness of available insulin by stimulating glucose to move from the bloodstream into body cells. Eat 1 cup of real cactus a day, capsules do not have the same effect.

Bay Leaf, Cinnamon, Cloves and Turmeric

Add a pinch or two of each spice to a pot of black tea and steep for 10 minutes, then ice the tea for one of the more refreshing natural diabetes treatments. You can also add a pinch of coriander and cumin as well as fenugreek. All of these have shown to reduce blood sugar somewhat.

Jackass Bitters

Mix 1 ounce of the herb with vermouth and take daily.

Bay Leaves

500 mg, about half a teaspoon, have been shown to lower blood sugar levels in experiments. Include a few bay leaves while cooking or take a supplement.

Fenugreek

Mucilage is a soluble fiber that makes up about half of the fenugreek seed. It's made up of six compounds that help regulate blood sugar levels.

Bitter Melon

This is one of the most excellent natural diabetes treatments because it actually increases the insulin secreting cells in the pancreas. Run the fruit through a juicer or blend it with a little water until it is thin enough to drink. Drink 2 ounces of juice twice a day.

Strawberry Tea

Put four to five fresh leaves in 1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink every six hours. Blueberry leaves work as well.

Onion

Onions have been used for a very long time in Asia, the Middle East and Europe as one of the more reliable natural diabetes treatments. Onions, especially the skins, are a very good source of quecetin.

Peanuts

Just like beans, peanuts have the ability to keep blood sugar levels low.

Black Tea

Black tea has shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels.

Stevia

Here's another one of the easier natural diabetes treatments to implement. Stevia has virtually no calories and has no effect on blood sugar levels.

It is an excellent herbal alternative to sugar or artificial sweeteners. You only need to use a drop or a pinch, not a spoonful, because it is known to be 150 to 400 times sweeter than sugar.

Marsh Mallow

35% of the marshmallow root is made up of a soluble plant fiber known as pectin. Steep the roots in water overnight.
