With all the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, it is hard to imagine taking a leisurely stroll in nature. While such an activity may not be on the itinerary of many people visiting Hong Kong, there are several great possibilities for appreciating nature in and around this city which is so famous for its skyscrapers and streets.

In fact, only a fraction of Hong Kong is urbanized. There are over 200 outer lying islands, and also the “New Territories” connected to the mainland. These places are naturally beautiful and offer some unique outdoor experiences.

Mai Po Wetlands on in the New Territories is a protected marsh that offers sanctuary to the numerous species of migratory birds that stop off in this wet , green land. There is a visitor’s center and education center near the wetlands, and also opportunities for guided tours.

Lantau Island is actually bigger than Hong Kong Island, but lacks its urbanization. Reachable by ferry, this island has sleepy fishing villages and a variety of hikes ranging from easy strolls to challenging treks. There is a visitor’s center on the island to help visitors decide where to hike, fish, or visit. Some of the small pagodas are the most peaceful places on this quiet island. Hong Kong’s new airport will be constructed on Lantau Island. Whether this disrupts the natural atmosphere of this place remains to be seen.

Lamma Island (population 6,000) is another place that is becoming increasingly popular because of its scenery and laid-back atmosphere. There are trails on the island and quiet, hidden bays and beaches. There is regular ferry service to the Lamma from Hong Kong Island, and a number of foreign expats have chosen this island as base rather than the crowded city. The other inhabitants are mainly fishermen. The main settlement is Yung Shue Wan. There are many hiking trails between it and other settlements.

Tolo Harbor, in the new territories, is a great place for both hiking and bicycling. It is possible to rent a bicycle once you reach the New Territories. The best (and longest) hiking trails are also found in the New Territories. MacLehose Trail is Hong Kong’s longest. Wilson Trail actually begins on Hong Kong Island before crossing over to the mainland. These trails are easily reachable by minibus.

Though Hong Kong is known as one of the most urban places in the world, there are trails and natural places everywhere. Lantau Island and the New Territories boast some of the most beautiful scenery in southern China.
