Well it was only a matter of time before Miley got into serious trouble, but I must admit, it has come in a rather surprising form. Miley and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus earned the ire of Consumer Reports when they failed to wear their seat belts in the Hannah Montana movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour.

Consumer Reports had this to say about the shocking incident:

"Why should we care? Because, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in about 55 percent of passenger vehicle fatalities in 2006 (the latest data available), the occupants were not wearing seat belts.

It seems to us that Miley, her father, and Disney had a perfect opportunity to help influence teens and counteract-rather than encourage-this trend. Then again, as Hannah herself sings, "Everybody makes mistakes."

Of course, no matter how tongue in cheek one is being about the issue, it is certain that failure to wear seat belts, or wearing them improperly causes hundreds, if not thousands of parents and children to lose their lives every year.

Ever on the ball, Billy Ray Cyrus apologized for failing to buckle up, saying:

"We got caught up in the moment of filming, and we made a mistake and forgot to buckle our seat belts. Seat belt safety is extremely important."

Let's face it however, the reason they weren't buckled up was probably because the director didn't want to have seatbelt lines ruining his shot. I doubt that Miley or Billy Ray had any say in whether or not they buckled up on the set. Still, it was nice of Billy Ray to take this one on the chin, and I hope he got a bonus from the studios for doing so.

An interesting response to the media storm has been the number of commenters on various websites who believe that it is unnecessary to wear a seat belt if you are sitting in the back of a vehicle. Case in point, this comment, taken from a website running this story: "Miley and her dad are sitting in the BACK. She is 15 and im sorry but i wanna ask all of you how many of you buckle up when sitting in the BACK."

This is a bit of a public service announcement to people of all ages who think that sitting in the back of a vehicle without a seatbelt on is okay. It's not. Being thrown against the seats in front of you at 60mph will kill you, or perhaps if you're 'lucky' maim and cripple you for life.
