By Tattoo Sally

If there were ever an unpretentious tattoo design, I'd say it's this one. The nautical star has been used by both genders, numerous social groups, and cultural heritages. Each group has their own lore behind the choice making this a very versatile symbol.

It's quickly recognizable, can be done relatively fast, and has strong meaning.

History to Sailors

The longest history belongs to sailors (hence the nautical style). Since man has sailed, they used the stars as early navigation aids. They became such vital tools that the star is entwined with sailing culture and the concept of "finding your way."

It makes sense then that early tattoo culture (which was heavily influenced by the navy and sailors) made lots of nautical star tattoos.

Recent Meanings

In the past 50 years nautical star tattoos have caught on with gays and lesbians, punk rockers, vegans, straight-edge, and military soldiers.

Each group uses it a common symbol. Like sailors, the idea of navigating your own path against all obstacles is very appealing. Keep that in mind when choosing your design.

Good Locations and Style

This design will work anywhere on your body. It is most often done on the arms or chest in a smaller style.

The most important choice for your nautical star tattoo is color. A monochrome star does not look nearly as good as a two or three color design.

A good color choice is red and black. Also, blue and black can look good.

Should I Get One?

It's really a personal choice to get this design. If you really agree with some of the traditional affiliations of a nautical star tattoo, then by all means know it will serve as a strong reminder. Go for it.

Please remember though there are many historical reasons. Tattoo culture is much more open than it has ever been, so if you like the design get it. Don't worry about what someone will think. You can create your own meaning in your nautical star tattoos.
