Most, if not all, people are likely to suffer from neck pain at one point or another. Neck pain can not only be annoying but agonizing and crippling as well. When neck pain sets in, especially the severe kind, you can end up missing out on the things you need to do because of the unbearable pain.

Neck pain takes on different forms and varying degrees. There is neck pain that is acute, or one that lasts for some hours to a few weeks. There is neck pain that is chronic, or one that lasts several weeks or even much longer.

Symptoms of Neck Pain

In any case, the symptoms of neck pain are almost always the same in most incidents. The kind of pain you feel in your neck may be sharp or dull, and your neck may experience some stiffness. In addition, there might also be pain felt in the shoulders, as well as back pain in some cases.

As stated earlier, neck pain causes difficulty in the completion of daily tasks because of the distraction provided by the hurting human anatomy. This is why relief should be sought right away.

Causes of Neck Pain

The causes of neck pain include muscle strains, worn joints, disk disorders, and injuries.

Overuse leads to straining of the muscles, especially in the neck area where muscles can easily get abused even for the minutest activities, such as reading in bed, typing in front of a computer, or gritting your teeth.

Like any other joint in the body, neck joints also suffer from wear and tear over time. This is more common among older people in whom age plays a significant role in the development of health problems. If left ignored, worn neck joints may lead to cervical osteoarthritis.

Aside from worn neck joints, age also causes disk disorders. In particular, the cushioning disks positioned between your vertebrae may become stiff and dry, making the nerve spaces in your spinal column become narrow or causing the disks themselves to become herniated. Because the nerves have difficulty moving out of the spinal column, neck pain results.

Finally, neck pain may be caused by whiplash injuries or those that are described by a sudden jerking of the head forward or backward.

Home Treatment of Neck Pain

If a check-up is not possible at the moment and you want to treat your neck pain, you could use home care treatments to get neck pain relief.

If there is inflammation, you could reduce the swelling by applying cold compress, such as an ice pack or ice wrapped in a towel, for a period of up to 20 minutes many times a day. For best results, alternate the cold treatment with warm treatment by taking a warm shower or putting a heating pad on your neck. While heat relaxes sore muscles, it can sometimes worsen inflammation so only use warm treatment sparingly throughout the day.

The easiest way to get neck pain relief is to lie down from time to time in order to rest your neck from the strain of holding up your head. Avoid too much rest or inactivity as this will worsen the pain. Slight and tender neck massages, as well as gentle stretching for 30 seconds, are also helpful home treatments you can employ to relieve your symptoms.

If Home Treatment Does not Work

If home treatment options do not work, or if your neck pains return frequently, consider visiting a chiropractor so you can do a thorough checkup. This might include an x-ray examination of your neck, to check if the poor alignment of your neck is the cause of the chronic pain. From there he would be able to suggest a proper neck pain relief program for more permanant and lasting relief.
