Money doesn’t grow on trees, but it does grow out of your head. Chest hair won’t make you much money in this business, but long locks of head hair will. If you’ve been getting your hair cut or trimmed significantly every so often, consider growing it out and sticking a FOR SALE sign on it. Hair buyers from all over the world need human hair for high quality wigs and hair pieces. Longer locks are always better and 24 inches of healthy shiny hair can get you about $1,200 or more!

If you think this is going to make you rich, chances are it won’t unless you start a hair farm and harvest other people’s hair like sheep’s wool and that would be kinda weird. To give you an idea of how much you can yield per year on your own, hair grows approximately half an inch per month in the winter and a little faster in the summer or during hot seasons. So, about 6 inches per year. As you age, the growth rate generally slows down.

With free money growing out of your head, this can be a very viable way to make quick cash if you already have long hair or money for a rainy day if you need to grow it out for a bit. It sound strange, but this is a great way for kids to make themselves some significant pocket money. Children’s hair grows twice as fast as adults so every two years it can be a $1200 paycheck for them.

How get the most for your hair:

  1. Don’t cut it even if you have 24 inches to spare. Leave your hair intact until it’s sold and cut it to the buyer’s request. Some buyers have very specific guidelines and if you don’t have it cut correctly it can cost you.
  2. Maintain a healthy life style for the most beautiful hair. Stress, poor diet, and malnutrition can affect the grow rate and health of your hair.
  3. Do not chemically threat or heat your hair. No bleaching, highlights, color, perms or hot iron on that hair, just leave it alone. Buyers want healthy virgin hair so that they can do with it as they please and you get top dollar.
  4. Stay out of prolonged sunlight. Of course we all know that the sun can damage your hair.
  5. Use only the best hair care products.
  6. Don’t wash you hair daily because it will be stripped of natural oils that help protect it.
  7. Take good photos when you’re ready to sell.

Where to Sell Your Hair

The best place I’ve found to sell your hair is www.thehairtrader.com. It’s free to list last time I checked and people have been known to sell their hair fast. But it’s a bit like selling on e-bay. You have to know what your hair is worth and perhaps let buyers bid rather than telling them how much or how little you want for it. Let them give you a price and negotiate upward. Don’t be too greedy and ask $10,000 unless your hair warps around your entire body 20 times and shines like a golden tooth, because you may risk loosing the bid. The maximum sale at thehairtrader.com so far has been $2,600, just an FYI.

Open Up Body Shop

A nice thing one could do with this is start a non profit organization that helps poor poeple of the world get their hair online and sold. $1,200 goes along way in many thirdworld countries. All you need is a computer, digital camera, internet access and a plane ticket. Head lice and parasites are of concern to buyers so you can help ensure that those pests have been eraticated before the sale.

As for hair stylists, when you have a client in your chair with hair that they want to chopped off, you can offer to do cut and style for free if they are willing to give you their hair. Then sell it off and make more than the hair cut would have cost.

Selling your hair is about the least invasive and painless (except for those who are emotionally attached to it) body part you can sell. It takes more time to grow than blood cells, but far less than a new kidney (yeah I know they don’t grow back LOL). But if you wanted to, you can make a whole business selling bits and pieces of yourself and this will just be another item on the menu.

Wow I had no idea you could sell your hair. I suppose for folks like cancer patients, etc. it could really come in handy.

About a year ago, I cut off 12" of my hair and donated it to Locks of Love (http://www.locksoflove.org) which makes wigs for children with life-threatening illnesses. The good feeling I got from doing that was awesome. A year later, money is incredibly tight and so this article has me thinking of selling my hair. I haven't had it cut in a year and it was long enough when I cut it last year, that I can probably get another 12" from it. I'm definitely going to look into the information here. Thanks!
