Need that white Wall Tire look like James Dean,s 1949 Mercury
76Rebel Without a Cause, 49 Mercuy
A cars naked without a white wall tire
I think most people agree that White Wall Tires really set a classic car off, the fist auto,s where made with white rubber so surprisingly white wall was the only way to go! but that did not last long due to poor traction, then carbon black was added for more road stickiness, when years past only the real expensive cars had white wall tires, then gradualy peaking up to about the time of James dean appearing in rebel without a cause in the now famous 49 Mercury, what a beauty, but now it seems it is retro time again and whitewall tire sales are growing very strongly.
Damn white wall tires are expensive but boy do they look good, be it motorcycle tires on a Harley Davidson or wide whitewalls on a New Yorker Brougham or maybe,s you like the antique look of redline tires? my favourite is wide whitewalls. Like anything white it is important to keep them that way, you don`t let your shirt turn a horrible yellow so do not let your tires do the same then you wont need too much elbow grease and scrubbing with some white wall tire cleaner. There is many ways to keep whitewall tires clean i`ll name a few to remove yellow stains try use #600 wet dry sandpaper or #0000 wire wool and clean soapy water, I,ve heard of laquer thinner but I do not really recommend it because if you get it on the black then you have a whole lot more scrubbing, then there is wesley,s bleach white best used with a stiff hair brush with brass wire bristles, I prefer the old soap and water but if the car has been sitting to long it can be a pain especially since the stain can return to haunt you, so regular cleaning is the easiest prevention to keep them white wall tires in top shape
Whitewall tires can be notorious hard to get an hold of and pricey compared to standard tires, what are the different types of white wall tires that are available today? well apart from making your own which i,ll talk about later and leaving the diffent sizes out of say 15", 16", 17" and also leaving out sizes of the actual whitewall, there are 3 distinct diffreent types of whitewall
- no1 is the white rubber rim clip on type, white wall tire inserts which german tv banned years back, I do not recommend these, one reason being I have heard that they can wear out the sidewalls of the tire, although I must admit have never tried them.
- no 2 is the vulcanized method a process where a portion of the tire is cut with a white wall tire machine and through a process of heat time and pressure the whitewall is inserted in place, since the vulcanization is done on the side of the tire wall this method is quite safe and by this method it is possible to design almost any type or size of white wall tires even for cars it would be impossible to get white wall tires for, this is the second cheapest option and one that lots of people go by. ask lots of questions when buying this type of tire as you do not want to be buying a cheap tire and for the sake of having the white wall on you will be paying a premium for, there is reputable company's about, but be sure to ask questions, like which make be it Bridgestone tires, Goodyear tires, BF Goodrich tires,or Firestone are they radial tires or bias tires? radial tires incidentally are much better quality tires with a hell of a lot more safety features built in and for high speed improved safety and handling but possibly a bit more roughness at low speeds and they will last a lot longer, if you want the originality you may need to stick with bias tires, what type of white wall, you want to know what type should my original white walled tires be,putting the wrong size tires on may look cool but you can make your car very sluggish so make sure you get the right tire size, most suppliers should have good data to check ensuring that the authenticity can be assured.
- Finally the best way is factory made whitewall tires, they may be the most expensive and not always possible to get your hands on, but they are the one`s I would choose, the main reason being is most, even the smallest looking cars are very heavy compared to todays and for this reason alone and with safety in mind I will not cheat on tire quality.
Whichever ones you choose shoud always come with a guarantee, one way that does not have a guarantee and is not as difficult as it looks especially after a bit of practise is making your own, i will leave that to the experts to show you but is one way of saving a small fortune
