Need a Helping Hand in your Business? Hire an Intern!
70Can't Afford an Employee or Temp? Relax!
Most business owners I know become frustrated as their businesses grow because they are doing well, but they aren't quite ready to hire employees to man the ship. Employee taxes, insurance and the like is costly and a big step for business owners.
I once knew an owner that needed someone to work for him, but couldn't afford to pay for decent help. When I suggested that he hire an intern, you would have thought I smacked him in the face! He looked at me dumbfounded and asked for more details.
Here's a great deal for those in the know: What is the one thing that students are looking for when they get out of school that they can't get? Experience! Let's say you need a graphic designer and can't afford the high prices of the professionals. Your job is a basic need and nothing fancy. Who do you contact? Go to your local college or technical school and ask to speak with the teacher of graphic design (or whatever it is you are needing).
Tell him or her your delimma and ask if they have a student that would be a good fit for you. Teachers know the strengths and weaknesses of each of their students and are quite willing to recommend someone for you. The great thing is that they would work for free for you! To keep them honest, you in return would write with the teacher's help, an evaluation of the student's work for your business. It not only keeps them honest, but you are providing experience to someone who desparately wants it!
Who knows? This student may really click with your business and you might just end up hiring them after graduation. In any event, the business owner gets his project done for free and the student gets experience and a possible reference for future jobs!
Let's say that you have a blue collar business and want to have some help without paying an arm and a leg. We'll consider a plumbing business. Go to a high school near your business. Ask the principal or school counselor if they offer programs where students work 1/2 day and attend school half a day. Some schools call it a "work study program". If they do, tell them about your business and ask if there is a student interested in learning about the plumbing business. The hourly rate will be modest and you will get a much needed hand for your business.
The same business can also benefit students interested in office work. Every business can use an office worker! For example, someone to answer phones, take orders, do light bookkeeping etc. Taking on interns and students in your business helps not only you, but benefits those looking to learn about business and getting that incredibly important experience for their resume!
If you're able to pay a modest rate for the student, you may snag yourself a quality protege. Let's face it, work doesn't stop because school is out fo the summer. The cash is a great incentive for the student to keep working for you during the summer months. It's also a way for you to keep your new employee. If they are promising in their skills, it's possible that you can groom him or her to take on more and more responsibility.
Who knows? This person may turn into a great employee once they graduate from school and will know your business inside and out. The training will have already been done and you might be able to take that great vacation you've been saving for!
It's the best of both worlds, so get out there and hire an intern. You'll be glad you did!
