Negative Calorie Foods

With more and more people searching for information about dieting and fat loss, the quest to find ‘miracle foods' - foods that actually cause you to burn off more calories than they provide is high.

If only there was a food that you could eat that would actually make you gain weight. How much more perfect could the world really get?

Unfortunately, as much as people want to believe such a food exists - it really doesn't.

While there are certainly some foods that will cause you to burn more calories than others (protein rich foods typically cause you to burn off 25% of their caloric content while fat-rich foods only cause you to burn a mere 2%), all food will leave you with a ‘net' of some calorie value.

Furthermore, another thing to consider is that some foods are so low in calories that you can virtually eat unlimited amounts of them without really worrying about weight gain.

Sure, if you ate and ate and ate, maybe you would gain weight, but due to their high water and fiber content, such a situation is very unlikely to occur.

Here is a list of such foods. The more often you are able to incorporate these into your diet, the greater the chances you will have success with your weight loss (assuming of course, that there is a corresponding decrease in other foods eaten).

Spinach

Spinach, which is a terrific source of folate and iron, comes in at a tiny amount of 7 calories per cup consumed. Considering it takes 3500 calories to form a pound, you can obviously see how long it would take to gain weight off spinach.

Asparagus

Another from the green vegetable family, asparagus is used by many fitness competitors when they are getting into contest shape.

It's a good source of nutrients and fiber, and at 20 calories per steamed ½ cup, hardly something that's going to put a dent in your weight loss.

Grapefruit

The grapefruit diet came out for a reason. While it definitely is not a nutritionally sound approach to follow alone, grapefruit is an excellent addition to your diet as it's low in calories and high in vitamin C. Half a fruit contains 44 calories and will keep you feeling satisfied after your morning breakfast.

Celery

Again, when looking for high-water content ‘bulk' foods, it really doesn't get better than celery. 6 calories per cup of this vegetable will hardly even make a difference in your diet. While you won't burn off these calories in digestion, you can basically omit even counting celery from your total daily calories.

Cucumbers

As you can see vegetables are a very good choice here and why they are so often recommended to dieters. Cucumbers as well, come in at only 8 calories for half a cup, so something else you can definitely load up on while trying to stop hunger and get that scale moving.

So, next time you're deciding what to have for lunch or dinner, consider adding these items to the menu. While you definitely will need other foods too (especially a good quality protein), these will help put a curb to your hunger and make dieting all the more easier.

Shannon,

This is so true.

Getting enough fruits and vegetables is the number one thing to do not only to lose weight but to stay healthy.

Thanks for another very informative hub.
