Most of the negative effects of caffeine are not a concern with occasional use, but can occur with regular use over 100 mg daily. The risks discussed in the following list vary with the level of caffeine intake and individuals sensitivity. A total of over 500 mg caffeine daily is high intake, and the total includes all coffee, tea, soft drinks, and drugs. Between 250 and 500 mg might be classified as moderate intake, while under 250 mg would be low. For a long time it is hard to refute the evidence. Common negative effects includes:

  • excess nervousness, irritability, insomnia, "restless legs," dizziness, and subsequent
  • hyperactivity and bed wetting in children who consume caffeine
  • increased stomach
  • loss of minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and zinc, and vitamins including the B especially when caffeine is consumed around mealtime)
  • osteoporosis and anemia
  • interrupted growth in children and adolescents
  • diarrhea
  • increase blood pressure and hypertension,, especially in atherosclerosis and heart disease.
  • increased cholesterol and triglyceride blood levels
  • heart rhythm disturbances
  • increased risk of heart attacks
  • kidney stones, which can occur as a result of diuretic and chemical effects
  • prostate enlargement maybe attributed to increase caffeine intake
  • birth defects and spontaneous abortions ( caffeine does cross the placenta and affects the fetus)

hmm, interesting article, My children's doctor tells me that too much fruit drinks have the same results as you have listed here for caffeine. I guess too much of any drink with the exception of water probably is not the most beneficial for a person.

btw, as a coffeeholic, I love the thinkgeek.com link lxxy provided :-)

Interesting points, many of which I hadn't heard yet.

What I have heard (from an old science teacher) is that caffiene lowers one's immune system 50% for the next 24 hours. Have you heard that before?

Indeed, makes me think.

What would be the equivalent to 100mg in cups of coffee?

Hi Beautyrose - would love to know your source but agree. Isn't it amazing how the majority of the world is into caffeine? For WeddingConsultant > caffeine depletes the glutathione in each cell of our body - which essentially is our immune system. Unfortunately, one of the few things that can replace glutathione is a specific whey protein isolate. We just don't bounce back like we did after 25 yrs of age. This too is due to the depletion of GSH in our cells.

Thanks for becoming a fan beautyrose - I look forward to reading more of your hubs :)
