Direct Sales Leadership with Integrity

Our personal integrity is the measuring stick of our character. It applies to us on a personal level and also applies to how we conduct our business. Everyone involved in network marketing would do well to consider their integrity before they blindly follow their up line into the business. I say this, because while network marketing is a business that builds leaders, not everyone involved in network marketing has yet learned how to be a strong, effective leader with integrity. Up lines will train their recruits to work the same model that has been successful for them. And as long as people within the industry continue to sell the businesses as a get-rich-quick, make millions-of-dollar a year opportunities, there will continue to be people involved in the business who do not conduct themselves with a great deal of integrity.

I want this industry to be the respected business model it should be. In order to get there, it begins with me. And you. And each and every one of us that consider ourselves to be network marketing professionals. We must pay attention to our personal integrity for the industry to get there.

I have searched the quotes databases on line and have not found the origin of the quote, but I have a friend who always says, "Those who don't believe in anything will believe anything." (I am certain that is a quote or a modification of a quote, and I apologize for not being able to credit it to the appropriate source. But I didn't come up with it myself! I am not that smart, I only recognize smart!) It is very easy to follow an up line down a path that will destroy your integrity if you have not considered what you believe in. Oh, and did I mention, we must act based on what we believe to be right and wrong. Belief is only a concept until you put it into practice!

This is particularly important for younger people to consider, but is a good reminder for those of us who have been around the block a few times, too! Without the experience and wisdom of life, it may not have occurred to a younger person that integrity is something that needs to be worked at every day and with every decision we make. Opportunities to demonstrate our integrity do not happen in hugely obvious ways like they do in the movies. There is no dark music in the background heralding a pivotal choice! They happen every single day in small ways. Every decision we make reflects our integrity and every single action we take is a tiny building block on the foundation of who we are. Every decision we act on reinforces who we are, either positively or negatively. You may believe you have great integrity, but it is your actions that will cause other people to see you the way you believe you are - or not.

So, exactly what is integrity? According to dictionary.com, integrity is defined as: "adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty." I like to think of moral principles in terms of the Golden Rule. "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you." That's pretty simple. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I think of ethical principles as morals applied to a societal group. So morals are your personal actions based on your choices, and ethics are the guidelines and standards the company (or group) you are working with has adopted.

The Direct Selling Association (DSA) is the organization that governs the principles that direct sales companies must comply with in order to be a member. The association is well regarded and enforces standards and principles to companies ensuring the member companies adhere to high ethical principles and standards. I strongly encourage you to affiliate yourselves only with companies that have been given the DSA's seal of approval. They are actively involved in understanding Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations. Being involved in a member company will save you heartache and money and will give credibility to your business efforts. The DSA website is located at http://www.dsa.org/, and I recommend that if you are not familiar with the association, you take the time to learn about them and the great things they do for you and the industry. You absolutely cannot explain to prospects the difference between your company and a "pyramid" without being aware of the DSA!

If your company is a member of the DSA, then you can be comfortable the company believes in strict ethical practices. But that does not necessarily mean that everyone working that business, to include your personal up line, have incorporated proper ethical principles into their training. Not because they don't believe in being moral and ethical, but because they are going to train you the way they were trained. Remember everything they have taught you about duplication? But please refer back a few paragraphs to the quote, "people who don't believe in anything, will believe anything?" If they have not thought about their integrity, they might not have recognized practices they were taught and they are teaching that might not be positively reinforcing their personal integrity.

OK, so that leaves us with moral principles. Treat others they way you want to be treated. If you have been involved in direct sales companies for more than a day; I can guarantee you have stories detailing how you don't want to be treated! If not, give it another week! Every time you see or experience something that does not "feel" right to you, you need to evaluate whether or not you want to duplicate that action based on your personal standards of integrity. You must constantly be asking yourself, "Is this right? Is this action consistent with the person I want people to believe I am?" There are many does and don't, I can provide the following suggestions based on my own experience, but that are certainly many more you will stumble upon if you constantly as yourself the questions above:

Never, ever, ever train your down line in a manner that is not focused on their success. By the way, they are responsible for defining what success means to them, not you. You need to listen and give them the help and support they need to meet their goals. Their success will lead to your success. But you must help your down line with the single focus on them, not you. People know when you are being selfish and they will feel used. Don't do it! Make your business revolve around helping others. When your business is bigger than you, people will start to see you as a leader worthy of following. When people follow you enthusiastically in this business, your success will grow.

Never, ever, ever encourage your down line to spend money they do not need to spend before they need to spend it. I was previously involved in one of the "party" direct sales company. Shortly after signing up, I went to a training meeting with one of our up line. You know the type, one of the ones making $50,000 per month. We were encouraged to buy a huge amount of product in order to have samples to show at the parties. The benefit to us was that buying all these products not only gave us the tools to show at parties, but we would make our first promotion! Yeah!!!! Well, I did that. Basically bought my way to a promotion that I could not sustain based on my sales and recruiting strategies. This type of "training" is what causes many discouraged multi-level marketers (mlm'ers) to feel that only the ones making money will continue to make money and it is off the backs of the recruits. This is just not a technique that helps your recruits be successful over the long run. I believe this company's up line would have been more ethically and morally credible if the up line would have helped the recruits with their parties and help them establish profitable business practices before encouraging them to spend the thousands of dollars required to have all the samples necessary to show. Just my opinion.... It's more work for the recruiting member. But direct sales is work. So you need to be willing to do the work to make the paycheck.

Always make the business about helping others. That is the only way people will want to work on your team.

Those are actions that are consistent with the person of integrity I want to be known as. You don't have to subscribe to the same principles I subscribe to. But the point is, you must not follow blindly! It is imperative that you apply your personal sense of right and wrong to this business. But to do this, you need to know with certainty what you believe!

So, just give it some thought. Know who you are. Know what you believe in. And don't compromise your principles.

Live your life and your business with pride!

Great hub and great advice! I fully believe and it has been proven that MLM/NM is NOT a sales and numbers business. It is a people business. If you make your business about helping others, all the numbers take care of themselves.

When I first became involved with MLM/NM in the early eighties, it was with a company like you mention that pressure you into monthly purchases in the hundreds (after you paid $500 for the start-up kit). There are some money makers in that company even today but I fully believe that it was earned on the backs of the recruits. I don't like doing that and I don't like having a team member feel like I would do that to them. I think that is one of the main things that cause such a negative attitude on MLM/NM in the first place. Now, we are having to try to educate people on the truth about what this business is really about today. That is a full time job in itself but one I believe is well worth the effort.

I listen to country music and there is a song that says "you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything". I was wondering if this was the quote you were refering to. It is so very true! Great job!

Thanks Bonnie,

It sounds like we are like minded. I think it's very sad that so many times in network marketing people leave the business and feel like they were taken advantage of. If all the network marketers started running their business with integrity, this industry would be unstoppable! There is so much potential in the business model. We need to start thinking about what we are doing and not simply following (and duplicating!).

My friend is a country music fan. So that might be where he came up with his quote. But once again, it's true. If you don't know what you believe, you're in trouble.

Thanks for the comment. Have a great week.

Yeah Pam! You are exactly the kind of person that will help make the turnaround our industry so desperately needs! I attended a seminar and one of the big money makers was telling us that when she first started and made an appointment, she would tell the prospect, "I'll have my assistant call to confirm."

We all laughed and though how brilliant that was, because it made her sound so official! Then I started to think about it and how misleading it was. She has now reached a point in her business where she really does have an assistant. But she didn't then.

How easy it is to be sucked into the web of "little lies" and "harmless fibs". Our customers and team members deserve far better from us!

Thank you for this important article!

Thank you Barbara,

I think our industry is changing for the better. Your story reminds me of listening to one of my upline telling the story of how she told a friend of hers that they were "stupid" to reject the opportunity without understanding the details! I guess it worked, because she's got the company car! But, I can't see me doing that!

I want people on my team who want to be there, not those who were tricked or cajoled into being there. And I want them to be able to respect themselves and me. There is plenty of business out there for all of us, so let's do it without compromising our integrity!

Pam: I love your Articles and this one tops everyting I have read so far. The photo struck me( I remember the olden days) and I mean olden because I am as old as dirt. A handshake was as good as gold because people in general, took pride in honesty and integrity.

I have been in marketing and sales for more than 40 years, so when I read your article I was reminded of how things have become so deceptive over the years. I truly hope persons like yourself can bring some improvement.

Thanks again: and thanks for being my Friend

  • Welcome to the New Economy

The economy has changed. Unemployment is higher than I have known it to be during my lifetime. And the sad fact is we may never see the economic prosperity we have enjoyed these past recent decades. History has shown that during times of economic recession, the number of scams increases. Just this week we saw Bernard Madoff sentenced to jail for his ponzi scheme conviction. And there will be many more to follow. These may not be on the large scale of the Madoff scam, but will not feel so insignificant for those poor people who loose their life savings. The upside, however, is that times of economic recession also create opportunities for those people who are able to grasp the changes and ride the wave. Many people are losing their jobs and are willing to consider business opportunities they would not have considered previously.  Some of these people will consider direct sales in a new light. People no longer feel that working for someone else provides the security they always believed was there. They want to work for themselves and have control over their financial futures. Direct sales offers the average person the capability to begin a business without a significant up front investment. They do not have to buy or rent a store front, they do not have to stock inventory, and they do not have to pay employees. In addition, the rewards for a direct sales business done correctly can be quite generous. One out three new millionaires in the US is coming out of the direct sales industry. So the question is, how do you "do it correctly?" It is a known fact that 95-97% of new direct sales entrepreneurs fail. • Character Always Counts

I subscribe to a number of Ezines and have learned a great deal from so many of the great mentors and leaders of our time through their weekly rants. As I was reading Chris Widener's 7 May article #3 The Last Word... I was struck by how much I agree with his take on leadership. The article is  Chris's answer to a question he was asked at one of his seminars. How can a person increase their sphere of influence. Chris states that in study after study, it is shown that people chose to follow other people based on two simple characteristics:  skill and character. I suspect that very few people want to follow a person who demonstrates incompetence! So it only makes sense that leaders need to be quite good at what they do. In life, we are constantly working to improve ourselves. That applies to all areas of our lives whether it is professionally, personally, spiritually or physically. We tend to gravitate to those who we perceive we can learn from. When we work or play side by side with someone whose skills exceed our own, we find ourselves performing at a higher level. We learn from that other person's skills. Even if they don't realize they are teaching, we learn because we are watching, replicating, and trying to improve. We challenge ourselves to perform as well as (or better than) the "expert" so that some day we will be the expert. But regardless how skilled a person is, I believe character is even more important. We will follow a skilled person until we learn everything we can learn from that person. But if they do not have integrity, we will not continue to follow once we have learned all we can learn through their expertise. If that experienced person also has good character and we feel we can trust them to deal with others with integrity and respect, we will continue to follow or at least be positively influenced by the expert even if we have learned all the skills they have to teach. In fact, I have observed (at least within myself!), that frequently a person with integrity does not have to have the same level of expertise as a person without integrity to be able to influence others. People want to follow people with integrity and character. So if you aspire to be a leader, remember that character definitely counts. You will always be working to increase your competency and skill. People will respect you for your efforts and forgive you for not knowing everything. But they may not forgive you for a lapse in integrity - even if you only demonstrate it one time. - 18 months ago

  • Integrity is Essential to Your Direct Sales Business

I recently wrote an article regarding integrity entitled: "Network Marketing and the Importance of Integrity." In this article I tell the reader that it is important that they understand what they believe in and then practice those beliefs. That is what leads to building powerful integrity. The nature of the network marketing business can lead people to forget the basics of a life of integrity. I believe that is based on two basic truths of the network marketing business:     1. Duplication. Because we are taught duplication, duplication, duplication, we don't question what we are being taught to duplicate! We aren't being taught to think, we are being taught to follow the leader. Which is OK, if we are being taught ethical principles.     2. Network Marketing businesses are often presented as easy, get-rich-quick opportunities. The lure of easy money tends to make all of us forget to ask ourselves if we are applying ethical principles to our behavior. And, regrettably, it can sometimes attract less than ethical people to the business to begin with. Therefore, it is so very important that we all know with certainty what we believe in and that we apply those beliefs to our every day business activities. We constantly need to be asking ourselves, "Is this right? and, Is this a behavior I want to be associated with?" If we can answer "yes" to these two questions, then we are living with integrity. When we are conducting our business with integrity, then we become leaders that prospects will want to follow. Isn't that what attraction marketing is about? Please read my article and let me know what you think. - 2 years ago
