Network marketing is a term that is heard more and more often in the business world today and it has become a very effective and lucrative method for people to start and promote their businesses. Network marketing can be difficult to implement and difficult for some people to understand at first, but here is some information that will make what network marketing is clearer to you.

Network marketing is narrowly defined as a business where a distributor network is needed to promote and build the business. Most network marketing businesses take the form of a Multilevel Marketing business (MLM) or some similar structure. Network marketing is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to the network that is used by a business to market a product or service when this is really not what it is. Network marketing is all about relationships and promoting a business from the perspective of building a relationship with clients and with employees (or people who are in your down line). Network marketing is all about helping other people build a business that focuses on customers and employees. As with most businesses, the most important aspect is really sales, because without sales the business simply can't exist for very long. In a network marketing business, someone can invest a small amount of money and some personal effort and discipline and that is really all they need to be successful. Network marketing isn't based on large signs and bid corporate offices that promote the company from within, but rather on the relationships that those participating in the business have with each other. Relationships are sometimes more important in the success of the business than the actual product because it is the relationship that gets other people to buy from the distributor. According to the Direct Selling Association, more than 13 million people in the US participate in network marketing or direct selling efforts to promote a business or product. Many people are uncertain about the credibility of this type of business and make judgments on what they have heard from other people but they may not fully understand all the aspects of network marketing. And sometimes new ideas are simply rejected because they put off the system and the way that things have been done previously in the marketplace. Network marketing is a newer idea and is unpopular with some but is gaining popularity and importance in the business world.

Network marketing or MLM companies usually offer a product or service that is offered to people at a reasonable price and this is consumed in a relatively short period of time and then they replenish their supply. Commission structure is different in these types of companies than in a direct marketing company and other aspects can be very different too. One of the most important claimed benefits of a network marketing company is that it is said to give residual income even though a particular person may not directly be involved in the sale of the product. Network marketing businesses cost much less money to start for most people than traditional businesses. The average Network Marketing business only costs a few hundred dollars to begin while a start up company approached through traditional methods costs on average 80 thousand dollars. This can be a very great advantage for people who want to make money with a business but who may not have their own idea or a lot of money to put into a business right away. A network marketing business also allows a lot more people to get involved in the business and share the benefits and profits of the company. It is also said that network marketing and MLM businesses build residual income through the way that they business is set up and structured. Another important aspect of this type of business is that it leverages the time of other people to benefit you in your business efforts.

How does network marketing work?

Network marketing is found all over the world and there are millions of people that subscribe to the efforts placed on network marketing. Network marketing companies are not very visible to those that are not somehow involved with them but they are almost a lifestyle for those who participate in the business. Many people are very attracted by the idea that they can make money and start a business with only a small investment on their part. Network marketing basically begins with a company that has a product they have developed and they want to use the method of direct selling or MLM business to promote and sell their product. The parent company uses independent, unsalaried salespeople to make use of the network marketing methods. These individuals are called distributors (or other titles like associates, independent business owners, franchise owners, sales consultants, independent agents, and other titles) and are the backbone of the business. If the parent company didn't have distributors the business would fail and they would not be able to continue selling their products. These distributors develop their own independent organizations or down lines through personal and family contacts who can then take part in their business. They look for an active customer base as well as looking for people who also want to own their own business and want to sell the product that is offered too. Recruiting the downline is very important to the success of a distributor and is the only way that they will develop residual income in the business. Distributors earn a commission off the sale of products by them or by someone in their downline. The commission they make from the sales of people they have recruited to the business can make a very significant contribution to giving them a considerable income. This type of relationship between distributors and their downline is similar to that of a franchise owner and the parent company to which royalties are paid to use the name and products of the parent company.

Many people wonder if this type of business is legitimate and if it can really be a good way to make a living. For some people it is very difficult to distinguish between legitimate (and legal) multilevel marketing and network marketing companies and illegitimate (and illegal) pyramid schemes or Ponzi schemes. Many pyramid schemes represent themselves as legitimate MLMs but are really not legal businesses at all. The most legitimate MLM companies can be distinguished by the fact that commissions are only paid to distributors when an actual sale occurs and not when someone is added to the downline. No money can be earned only from recruiting other people to participate in the business in a legitimate MLM business. If the company requires the person to buy more products than they can actually sell themselves or they only make money when they recruit someone, it is probably a scam and is also considered illegal in the US. If you are planning on starting a business of your own and think that taking this approach would be good for you, then you need to do some research on the company before you make any kind of commitment to take part in the business or to sell anything. New sales people can still be asked to pay for their own training and for the first round of products they sell because the business is ultimately theirs. But most companies try to follow a 70% rule meaning that they require participant to sell 70% of their inventory before they can buy more from the company to distribute. This is good for the distributors because it means that they don't have a garage full of products they are unable to sell and then lose hope and eventually a lot of money. A company that requires that a routine shipment or purchase be made or for a required amount of product to be purchased by the distributor whether they have sold their current inventory or not can be a very serious red flag as to the legitimacy of the business. For many companies it doesn't matter if the person selling the product is also consuming it. The most important different in the legal and illegal versions of this type of business stem from the idea that you need to buy the opportunity to do business in any form whatsoever.

When you are thinking about starting a business in general, you should do a lot of research and make sure that you are getting into a legitimate business. Starting a business can be a very exciting thing and can provide a great opportunity for many people to make more money than they may have with a more traditional job and it also allows them to make decisions and be independent, at least in some ways, from having a boss looking over them all the time. If you are planning on getting into MLM marketing, make sure that you do your research on both the product and the company before you commit to do anything. If a company refuses to give you honest and upfront answers, then their reputability should be questioned. If there is ever something that makes you uncomfortable about an idea, you should clarify through asking questions or just trust your instincts.
