Deciding whether to buy a standalone printer or a network WiFi printer

When it comes to technology, you really need to decide early on whether you're the type of consumer that prefers to be on the cutting edge of things, or if you're the type of consumer who prefers to buy low and get by with what they have til it croaks.

For me, only certain things will I buy low and use til it croaks. First thing that comes to mind would be shoes. However, when it comes to technology, I enjoy getting the latest and greatest and THEN using it until it croaks, this way, I know it will last a long time and I know that it will allow me to stay compatible with ever growing systems.

Going back a few years, I remember buying one of the very first "all in one" WiFi printers. At the time, it was copy, print and scan. Now you can get a fax function, you can get a HiDef Photo function, and with the software that comes with these printers, they allow you to "repair" old photos.

In my mind, it's a no brainer, unless you're buying a printer for an elementary student and you have an only child, to get a network Wifi printer. There are already so many out there, it's hard to make a decision.

The first thing that you need to consider is, are you working on a PC or a MAC, also what version operating system are you using?

What functionality do you prefer? Are you looking for speed? Are you looking for business use? academic use? artistic use? That would help you in deciding whether to go with 4 inks or 6 inks.

How many printers in the household? What is the likelyhood that you would purchase another laptop or desktop?

In the end, for my personal opinion, I would select the Epson Artisan 800. This printer is a great buy 5 in 1printer, Wifi capable and functions on both a PC Windows XP/Vista and MAC network. It will be good for the next 4 to 5 years before something hotter comes along. If you don't need that 5th function (FAX), then opt for the Epson Artisan 700 model for about $50 less.
