Neutering Cats

I have had cats most of my life, apart from other animals as well, and I think the same rule applies to all of them 'what you don't know you don't miss'. So the first thing is that if you decide that you want to neuter one of your animals it should be done from a very early age. For example with a female cat it should be just before she comes on heat which is round about six months. With a male it can be a little bit later like 9 months and also for a male it is a much simpler and safer operation.

All my neutered cats have been fine afterwards. They have become calmer and wanted to stay at home more and the only thing that I have had to be careful about is not letting them get too fat.

I think that unless you wanted to breed from your cat because he was a pedigree it is far better to have him neutered.

I love horses as well and in the horse world when a stallion was just a bit too difficult and strong to handle he would be castrated, or gelded is another word, and the horse afterwards would then calm down quite significantly and it is the same with most animals.

So don't worry too much. Men have vasectomys don't they, so it's all more or less the same thing.

Thank you for answering my request! You're the first to answer any of mine :) And of course welcome to Hubpages!

Our older male was neutered when he was about 1. His personality did a complete 180. That was a year ago and now I am gradually seeing him begin to come around and become a more stable cat (not that he ever really was).

The three we are having done are six months. The female has already had her first season and the boys are also already sexually mature. We weren't expecting it to happen quite this young and should have had it done ages ago (guilt much? Ugh!). I love them dearly and would hate to see them become neurotic like our two year-old :(

Animals are all different. They have their own different personalities just like humans do and so although we try to make rules for them, the rules don't always work for all of them precisely because of their different personalities. Your two year old must have just been an extra-ordinary character and maybe nothing was ever going to calm him down.

Good luck and I love speaking with people who love animals, they are usually very good people with good hearts!!

We're probably going to try feliway when we can afford to sink $60 into it. He's a great cat -- he really is. He's just... neurotic. He thinks that my husband is going to eat him (seriously) and won't let anybody but me near him. Sometimes he'll let the baby close. It's pretty crazy! When we neutered him he wouldn't let me around for a *very* long time!

The kittens are different. All of them. We have a one year-old who we aren't prioritizing for neutering because she's sterile already and we wasted too much time on the health benefits (darnit!). But the babies are wonderful kitties!

Hello Ally,

This is quite normal and to be expected. Firstly the operation is longer than for a male cat and the after effects of the anaesthesia take quite a while to wear off. She is probably also feeling a little strange herself due to the descent in her level of hormones and has no idea what happened to her or why.

Give her lots of love and patience and I think that within a month her body and hormones should have adjusted to their new state and she will have forgotten about this ordeal.

And now that she is neutered keep an eye on how much she eats so that she doesn't put on weight !
