The two top companies offering Breakdown cover are the AA and RAC. I have used both of them and they offer excellent services. You can never be stranded.
When you sign up for membership with them, you will be put on a low premium but on renewal the amount of this premium doubles. If you do not wish to pay a higher premium all you need to do is:

Inform the current company you are with, via phone or letter that you do not wish to renew your membership.

Ring up the new company and sign up for membership with them. (Starting date to commence the day after your original one ends). Again you will be starting on a low premium payment and they would most likely have Introductory offers, thereby saving you money.
It takes approximately 20 minutes to carry out the steps above over the phone.
