New Orleanians' Hurricane Katrina Tattoos by Rebecca Freeland & ChinMusic Press
63New Orleans is a Holy City, full of symbolism....
Chin Music press is coming out with a sequel anthology to their "Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Olreans?", about New Olreans and the "counterclockwise swirl of Katrina". Release date set for August of 2010, titled "Where We Know: New Orleans is Home".
Tattoo fans will enjoy this excerpt from Rebecca Freeland's essay about Katrina Tattoos found in a new publication by Chin Music Press "What We Know: New Orleans is Home", "... I noticed, being tattooed myself, all the Katrina tattoos. Everyone had them; young, old, middleclass, gutter punks, soccer moms, the likes. I realized how many people, unbeknownst to one another, have gone out and gotten these Katrina tattoos to help them deal with their emotions. In the beginning I approached the Katrina tattoos in a spiritual and cathartic manner but the more time a spent on the project and the people I inter viewed, the more I realized that I was really dealing with what I would call a ‘Grace experience’. The Jesuits have a great saying, ‘find God in everything’; I found that in these stories. Grace has many faces and means different things to different people. For people living in New Orleans, before and after the storm, Grace came to them through Hurricane Katrina."
"Alma Maleckar has a tattoo of a flying Po’Boy that tattoo artist Josh White gave here in her living room after the storm...She noted the religious undertones of the wings and calls the City of New Orleans ‘a sort of deity’"
"Spencer was a lawyer for 22 years before he decided to pursue acting and painting. Spencer lived in the Irish Channel and stayed in New Orleans during and after the storm with his cat and dog. He told me he ‘didn’t have much to do’ and having tattooed himself in the past Spencer gave it another go."

I wish I had a picture of my brother-in-law's Katrina tattoo.
