New Years Eve in New Orleans
70
There are a number of reasons to go to New Orleans...Mardi Gras...Jazz Fest...crawfish season...but many probably do not think of New Orleans as a destination for New Year's Eve. As you are planning your next New Year's get-a-way consider these reasons to bring in in the New Year in the Big Easy:
- The Weather. New Orleans has a subtropical climate with the coldest month being January. Average temperature in December/January is in the mid-50's, which is a nice change from muggy and 90's in the late Summer months. This means that bar-hopping during the night won't be so unbearable and you'll probably only need a light jacket for seeing the city during the day.
- Cost. December and January are off-cycle months for New Orleans tourism. You can often find really good rates at hotels anywhere in the city during this time of the year. Also, most restaurants and entertainment venues will offer special promotions for New Year's Eve, which can include open bar, free tickets to live shows, or three-course meals with all the bubbly you want.
- Atmosphere. New Orleans is a city that knows how to celebrate. Given a reason, even a hurricane, and the city will not disappoint! From a refined dinner to a raucous karaoke bar, you can find just about any way you are looking to spend New Year's Eve.
- Kid-friendly (somewhat). New Orleans has a fabulous Childrens Museum as well as one of the best Zoos in the nation. Both locations host a "Countdown to Noon" party every year on New Year's Eve Day. Also, Louisiana has somewhat more "liberal" liquor laws than most states. Adults 21 years of age and older are allowed to drink on the street, as long as it is not in a bottle or glass. So, parents can still grab a Hurricane from Pat O'Brien's before heading to Jackson Square to watch "Baby Bacchus" drop and the fireworks show over the Mississippi River!

I actually did celebrate New Year's Eve in New Orleans with my husband and two children who were in high school/college several years ago. We walked the streets of the French Quarter and were amazed with a wonderful fireworks show that lit the night over the Mississippi River at midnight. The crowds were friendly and festive with ages ranging from children in strollers to seniors. Like any big outside event, you need to be aware of your surroundings and use common sense.
