New York Giants Execute New England Patriots- Super Bowl XL-II Arizona 2008
61Super Bowl XL-II Biggest Upset in History
Eli Manning of New York Giants has once again proved to be such an asset in the downing of New England Patriots.
The New York Giants has had a very good season winning 11 straight games in the NFL league playoffs building up to last Sundays (3rd) win over the Pats. The Giants crushed the New England Patriots 17-14 in what was seen as the most humiliating defeat yet to be handed down to the pats.
True to the super bowls tradition, this super bowl Sunday’s mood was fierce and both teams raring to have each others jugular. Previously, the New England team had had an unspotted straight wins blazing their trail to the past super bowl.
In one of the most tightly fought match in Super Bowl history, Eli who was the unlikely Giant’s shine boy rammed Plaxico Buress to sprint the 13 yard frontier to touch down with only thirty five seconds of the game left. The giants had previously played three consecutive season away wins. Patriots on the other hand had not known defeat for the last one whole season year and it was such a crushing feat for the New Englanders.
Manning was reported commenting that his team, the giants had such confidence in winning the game that the rest was just a formality. “The players believed in each other”, he said.
It was the most bitter loss for the patriots as they were the 12- point favorite with a record (18-1) wins. The team was counting on this last win to seal off a straight win season and also avenge for their being penalized for taping New York jets defensive signals in the first match of the season.
Coach Bill Belichick lamented that “I don’t rank them,” He said, “Its disappointing”.
The otherwise earlier in the season perfect Patriots goofed with wasting a big and bad defense strategy. Eli manning of the giants on his part actually outshone the teams MVP Tom Brady and furthered his family legacy a year after elder brother Peyton led Indianapolis to the Super bowl title.
The Giants had the perfect answer for the suddenly imperfect Patriots: a big, bad defense and the improbable comeback led by Manning. Yes, Eli Manning, who outplayed league MVP Tom Brady and furthered the family legacy one year after older brother Peyton led Indianapolis to the title.
Brady easily found Randy Moss for a 6-yard touch down with only 2 minutes 42 seconds to go. New England’s defense was outplayed and could not keep up the frantic final pace 12-play, 83-yard home drive. Manning romped avoiding a scramble and a spectacular leap catch by David Tyree .
Manning was ecstatic about his being in the same position as his brother Peyton a year ago. “You cant write a better script”, There were so many big plays on that drive.” He said.
With the downing of the Patriots, the former 1972 Miami Dolphins have maintained their position as the only team to go through a season unbeaten, the perfect season.
"As for the 1972 Dolphins, I don't take joy in the fact the Patriots lost -- period," said Jim Mandich, the tight end on the 17-0 team. "But I do relish and savor the fact that there has only been one unbeaten team in the history of the NFL, and it is the 1972 Miami Dolphins."
It was not much the pressure to retain an unbeaten season that did in the Patriots but rather the pressure of an overwhelming Giants passes. They just kept coming no matter how hard the New Englanders played their defenses.
Belichick grudgingly lamented ‘”they played well”. They had some plays. We made some plays. They just made a few more. We played as hard as we could. We just couldn’t make enough plays”. He said.
That was hardly the favored position for the record setting patriots and their shinning star studded quarter back. This time round it was not the Patriots making the opponent bashing rally but the Giants continually assailing the quarter back until they broke ranks.
It was revenge of sorts for the Giants, that seems to have motivated them to win its 3rd super bowl and the sixth NFL title. New England had earlier won 38-35 the 17th Week to finish its previously unstained regular season.
The giants picked momentum along the playoffs with victories in Tampa, Dallas and Green bay and finally the grandest opponent of all-the Patriots.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, every team is beatable, you never know the right moment, the right time, every team is beatable.”
Belchick somewhat deserted his team before fulltime when he rushed across the field to shake the hands of Giants coach. As he pranced across the field his team was conceding a score with 1 second to full time. This has not gone down well with some of his team supporters arguing that he should have been a better loser.
