Interview By AlyiceEdrich.net
Just a quick interview with author, Tricia Goyer, on her infamous book, Next Generation Parenting. Enjoy!
Why did you decide to write Generation Next Parent?
I got the idea after attending a parenting group. Most of the other moms were older and they were complaining about "those younger moms" who want to provide everything for their kids. After that I started looking into the different generations. Amazingly, as I researched, I discovered younger moms (born between 1961-1981) DO see life differently. We have different values and desires . . . but that's okay. God placed us here as parents for this time in history, for a purpose!
After that, I started looking around and I didn't find any books that talked about the uniqueness of Gen X parents, so I decided to write one. I talked about some of our struggles and shared from my heart.
In a day and age where everyone is moving at such a fast pace, how can parents slow down long enough to find themselves without sacrificing family?
That's a tough one! I think the number one thing we can do to "find ourselves" is to discover who we are in Christ. God created us. He knows are gifts, dreams, desires. He also knows our struggles and challenges. Instead of looking around, trying to keep up, and feeling insufficient, I take time--even if it's three minutes at a time--to focus on God, pray, and ask Him to make His thoughts, my thoughts.
It has been said that Generation Next Parenting discusses laying down firm foundations. What are firm foundations and how can they improve one's family?
The firm foundation that every chapter focuses on is the Word of God. With so many experts, voices, and opinions for parents, it can be overwhelming! Yet God's word never changes. No matter whether we're talking about discipline or society or busyness, God's Word has something to say about it. So each chapter I go back to God's Word and start with His opinion first.
Thanks so much for the quick thoughts on your book!
