Nialor®

Overview
The advertising for Nialor® purports the main ingredient, niacin, is better formulated than other supplements because it also contains milk thistle and sugar cane policosanol to act as accelerants for the niacin. That may not come across as a big deal to you, but if you have ever taken niacin in large doses you have experienced the negative side effects of flushing and nausea that are associated with the mineral. So, the sooner you can metabolize the niacin the better!
It is purported that studies show that low HDL cholesterol makes you 16 times more likely to suffer a heart attack. The advertisers emphasize that while the American Heart Association shows that elevated LDL cholesterol plays a significant role in the risk for heart disease, high HDL cholesterol is mandatory for lowering the risk for heart disease. As you may remember, genetics and lifestyle go hand in hand determining whether you are at risk and they in turn affect not only the HDL and LDL levels, but also your triglycerides. Nialor® is clearly a supplement that addresses two of the three, but don’t forget the importance of lowering the LDL cholesterol levels through some other supplementation.
Ingredients and What They Do
Niacin, Milk Thistle, and Sugar Cane Policosanol
As I mentioned earlier, the milk thistle and sugar cane policosanol supposedly makes Nialor® a better choice for niacin supplementation. First, I’ll tell you about the negative side effects associated with the large amounts of niacin in most of these types of supplements, and then I’ll tell you why the manufacturer believes they’ve improved the delivery of the niacin.
Flushing is said to be the common side effect of niacin, if you have ever consumed a vegetable beet juice you know exactly how uncomfortable and embarrassing the side effect can be. What happens is your capillaries are expanding and your blood flow is increasing, the result flushing that indicates an improvement in circulation. You may remain flushed for up to an hour and you will probably experience hot and itchy sensations. It is important not to consume alcohol as it may exacerbate the symptoms.
The manufacturer has combined milk thistle and the policosanol with the niacin in order to offset the typical niacin flushing effect. The combination is believed to suppress the body's production of prostaglandin (the inflammatory hormone that causes the flushing) thereby making the supplement more tolerable.

You can obtain non-flushing Niacin from your local Vitamin Shop by looking for Niacin bound with Inositol. Inositol is related to the B vitamin complex. I take 1000 milligrams of Inositol bound Niacin daily, but cannot even tolerate 500 mg of pure Niacin.
If you wish to add Milk Thistle to your regimen you may purchase that supplement separately in capsule form from any vitamin store.
As far as the Policosanol which has been added to Nialor, as of late 2009 no conclusive, consistently repeatable, evidence exists showing any benefit to the human body of Policosanol consumption.
True, Niacin has been shown to be the best available substance to raise HDL. The most inexpensive way to take such Niacin, without the discomfort of flushing, is to purchase Niacin bound with Insoitol from your local Vitamin Shop.
The Nailor product may be beneficial to raising HDL. Readers of this page, on a limited budget, may wish to be aware that they may be able to purchase the ingredients for ingestion at a lower price.
