Gay travel in Granada, Nicaragua

When a gay traveller thinks of gay-friendly places to visit, Central America probably doesn't pop up on the top of the list. Like most countries in the world, however, gay culture finds a way to survive even if the outlets for gay culture are sparse. While a gay couple would want to refrain from openly showing affection to each other, it is not out of the realm of possibility to see openly gay natives in the street. Though the gay traveller may not be accosted, you will certainly get looks or a round of laughter if holding your partners hand or make a public show of affection.

Granada, Nicaragua offers a more welcoming attitude to gay tourists than the capital city, Managua. Though the colonial city is certainly no gay mecca, there are restaurants and hotels that appeal to gays and lesbians. The one hotel that caters specifically to gay men is called the Joluva Guest House, just off the central square. The owners are extremely kind and more than willing to give advice of food, tours and must-see attractions. While the hotel is simple and inexpensive, it offers a comfortable and open sanctuary for its guests. Joluva offers a small breakfast and also has masseurs who give an incredible and extremely affordable hour-long body massage for 20 US dollars. It is not unusual to see the guests and owners sitting around a large table chatting happily about a number of interesting topics.

Another gay-friendly hotel is the Bohemian Paradise Hotel, also not far from the town square. Bohemian is a little more expensive but offers more elegance. The rooms are large and comfortable and the suite is huge, featuring a jacuzzi and a walk-in shower that allows you to shower under the stars. This hotel is also a comfortable option for the gay traveller who wishes to relax in an atmosphere that allows one to be him/herself. Lucy, the manager, is welcoming and willing to help with any needs that her visitors may require.

As for food, they are some restaurants that allow gay tourists to dine in comfort. Monna Lisas, located on a strip near the main cathedral, is a cozy eatery that is tasty and affordable. Another enjoyable place to eat is El Tercer Ojo (The Third Eye), which is an Asian fusion restaurant. While holding your partner's hand, you can order a tasty pitcher of sangria and various entrees, like a delicious Thai chicken dish.

While Granada may be lacking in gay clubs, it offers the gay traveller a safe environment to enjoy Nica culture, good food and adventure. The influx of gay tourists as well as the increasing openness of gay Nicas will hopefully encourage the city to continue to add gay and gay-friendly business.
