The Nikon Coolpix S60 is the newest generation of 'point and snap' camera. This won't be what a professional photographer will be buying but for the casual user, it's excellent.
Some of the features include a massive 10 mega pixel resolution which will enable you to print fantastic quality pictures of up to 16 x 20 inches as well as a 5x optical zoom lens with 'VR image stabilization'. It has a 3.5 inch high resolution touch panel LCD screen and automatically adjusts the ISO up to 3200. One of the other great things is that you can save to an expandable memory slot in the form of SD/SDHC.
This is a very good looking camera and has obviously been built for easy usage with the 20MB of internal memory, SD card expansion slot and JPEG, AVI and WAV formats. Its direct competitor would be the Sony Cybershot T700 which doesn't even come close. As always Sony decided to release 'Sony specific' items on it like the 'Memory Stick Duo' expansion slot rather than the universally acknowledged SD card that the Nikon uses. This means that people would have to go out and buy a specific card just to use on that camera rather than use what they probably already have. The Sony also only has 15MB of internal memory which would mean the user would have to buy a memory card expansion.
The Sony does however come out on top in a certain area and that is size, it is a quite a bit smaller than the Nikon, a whole 5.6mm in width which when talking about something that is only 22mm in the first place is about 25% thinner.
They both have little bits of software of software added on for various things, the Nikon has the VR image stabilization which reduces camera shake as well as smile shutter and blink warning which will let you know when a subjects eyes are closed so you can retake the picture. The Sony also comes with the smile shutter function as well as face detection technology which automatically recognizes faces and adjusts the flash and exposure. Overall the Sony comes out better with regards to the software.
After looking at both cameras in detail I have come to the conclusion that the Sony is aimed at 'gadget buyers' who want all the up to date equipment with the new facial recognition software and so on. To get this however, they will be sacrificing the compatibility which in my opinion is the most important thing when buying electronics. The Nikon seems to give a better overall balance between technology, easy usage, compatibility and style. It would get 8/10.
