D90 comes as the successor of D80 which are brought forth from the stables of Nikon two years back. D80 is still being sold like hot cakes all over for their features and their versatility. Though both of them look similar, the features incorporated within the successor are tempting. This article serves as a brief guide for the interested users who are looking to buy this product in the near future.

Firstly we will take a look at the various features which have been incorporated into this new product. The product features a new 12.9 mega pixel sensor which works on the CMOS technology which can be used to clicking pictures as well as recording movies. The sensor has an integrated cleaning module which can be used after long periods of outdoor shootings. The metering sensor found in the model is a RGB 420 series. ASIC processing using Nikon’s trademarked EXPEED technology has also found its liberal use in the product. The LCD screen incorporated within the unit boasts of a 920000 dot 3 inch which basically mounts to a VGA sort of display. The construction also feels solid and the camera oozes good craftsmanship. Nikon are known to use materials of the best gradients in their products and D90 is no exception in this field too. Rubber grips have been lavishly integrated into the unit for sufficient grip for the fingers.

The unit weighs just appropriate, not too heavy or flimsy on the hands of the beholder. The novel control panel which can be found towards the top right part of the unit is also innovative in a number of ways. Various photographic and digital settings can be altered using this control panel. The panel is also back lighted, hence there won’t be any problems handling the unit in pitch darkness too. The menu layout is similar to the D80 series. Some of the buttons which can be found on the top of the unit are the power button, which also has control over the backlight illumination, metering mode buttons, compensation buttons, different shooting modes and the focus modes. Focus as seen on the cameras in this segment is done automatically but manual focusing can also be done if required by the user. Mainly three forms of metering modes are used, they are 3D color matrix metering, and Centre weighted metering and Spot on metering.

Image parameters can be adjusted within various modes which range between quick adjust, sharpening, hue and saturation. Brightness and contrast can also be tampered with. Various picture control presets are also featured in the product which includes standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome, landscape and portrait modes. Sharpening adjustments are liberally made use of with different modes which suffice the purposes too. Most of the manufactures of digital cameras optimize their product for still pictures, but video shooting is also given due importance. As a matter of fact this model is the world’s first DSLR enabled video digital camera. But the only gripe is the low sound recording for which the options are limited.
