Rock band Nine Inch Nails are giving away their latest music album “The Slip” for free. There are no pre-requisites; anyone can download it at no charge.

In the past, the Nine Inch Nails (NIN) gave away part of their previous album, “Ghosts I-IV” for free and sold the entire album of 36 tracks for only $5. They had phenomenal success with this novel release.

Now NIN is giving away their entire new album, “The Slip” for free as a thank you gesture.

Trent Reznor of the Nine Inch Nails said the following on his website:

As a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com.

The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. your link will include all options - all free. all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.

For those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in July. details coming soon.

To download this album, enter your e-mail address here and NIN will then send you a link where you can download any of the four formats: MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE for free.

Wow. Radiohead did this previously, but they let fans decide how much they wanted to pay. I wonder if this will catch on?

Angela, yes Radiohead also did that. Nine Inch Nails said they received more money from their fans than from the Music industry, so if every artists sells at a reasonable price and most of the profits go to the artist, I think many would be interested.

This is the first time I've heard about bands giving away their music for free. I guess this will stop the illegal downloading of their songs. Downloading it can't be illegal when it's free to the public, right? :P

Hi Susan, the previous album, they gave away nine songs and sold the remaining 27 songs for $5 which still was a great deal. This is a greater deal even, but I think we should donate them for their efforts, not many artists can afford to give away their songs.

I agree. Being able to pay only what we can afford would be nice. CD's here in the Philippines are almost ridiculously overpriced. At 425-475 pesos, you shell out roughly two days worth of your salary for just one CD. I'd be willing to pay 250 pesos for a CD; at least that's just one day's salary (at minimum wage). :P

I agree Susan. The music industry is exploiting the artists, they charge high but give only a percentage to the artists, that is why Nine Inch Nails wants to promote their music on their own. They are happy selling the music directly.
