Nintendo Brain Age DS
An enjoyable fitness regime for the brain.
Much as physical exercise feeds your muscles with nourishing and cleansing blood, mental exercise has been shown to do the same for the brain.
Look how many different ways there are to exercise the muscles in the stomach. Each exercise affects your tummy in a different way. And to get the best overall workout for your tummy, you have to use a wide range of exercises.
That appears to be the way our brains work too. Different mental tasks affect the brain in different ways. And in giving your brain a wide range of tasks that affect it in different ways, Brain Age gives your brain a well-rounded training program. So, in Brain Age you are given:
- Simple mathematical calculations like 3+8. Or 6x9. Or 14-5.
- Memory tests like keeping track of how many people enter and leave a house
- memorizing as many 4-letter words as possible in 2 minutes
- Counting tests such as counting syllables in words
- Puzzles like Sudoku
- Reading exercises – simply reading out classical literature.
The aim is for you to do these activities by playing on your DS for just a few minutes every day.
Then, regularly, Brain Age gives you Stroop Tests. These are tests that appear to be very simple, but are surprisingly good at gauging your mental flexibility. These tests are so sensitive, they were used to monitor how brain function in Mount Everest climbers changed, the higher they climbed.
These tests are used in Nintendo Brain Age DS to track the steady improvements (hopefully) in your brain function.
As you improve, your brain gets more agile, more flexible, .. more youthful. Your Brain Age shrinks.

A Little Brain Age Background
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! Was created by Dr Ryūta Kawashima for the Nintendo DS portable video game system.
It is based on Dr. Kawashima's startling research in which he found that simply doing simple maths calculations and reading books aloud can protect you from the mental effects of ageing.
You may have noticed the fact that Brain Age gives you 'simple' maths problems to do. That's not because this game is trying to appeal to young children or those with poor maths skills.
No.
It's because Dr. Kawashima's research showed quite clearly that SIMPLE calculations are what activate the brain the most. By far. Complex math problems just didn't help to improve mental ability.
Isn't that remarkable?
His research also showed that the best way to activate the largest parts of the brain was to solve these calculations quickly. Which is why your Brain Age challenge is to do these simple tasks quickly.
Some Thoughts On The Nintendo Brain Age DS Vibe
Brain Age is whole different animal. It's surprisingly addictive and has been known to bring out a surprisingly competitive streak in the most mild mannered people. Such as people formerly known as 'my friends', of whom I now have to be a little wary! Not me, naturally.. Oh no!!
Even grizzly, die-hard fans of shoot-em-up, adrenaline-spiking action games have been known to enjoy a little Brain Age gaming every now and again. Perhaps it helps improve their reaction times? Raising them to super ninja status in a Matrix kind of way? Who knows.
But for the rest of us not engaged in the daily fight to preserve our galaxy from evil aliens or 'bad guys', Brain Age is just a whole barrel of FUN!
