Nintendo Wii - Carpal Tunnel and a Broken TV
69How the Wii changed my wiikend…
Carpal Tunnel and a Broken TV
There I was, Saturday afternoon walking through the electronics store wondering why I didn’t get the insurance on my new HDTV. It all started so innocently enough when my younger son and I started looking into getting a Nintendo Wii. We looked online and did our research and found a great deal on the ‘bay’.
That was two weeks ago…
Playing GST we were kinda looking for more action and playability. Sure it was fun but the gestures and body movements didn’t quite match what we were doing, and we were giving it our all!
We looked online and found http://www.motion-plus.co.uk selling the Wii MotionPlus that we found comparable, and the techs at motion-plus.co.uk were pros and had us up and running in no time. Talk about the movement – like a fine Swiss watch! Every turn, twist and volley it followed our every move.
I tell you, it was an awesome time – just me and my son – laughing, competing, joking around… that we forgot one simple rule….
I’m wandering the electronic store thinking of how great a time we had, my wrist in a cast and my wallet feeling ever so lighter, I walked the aisles and listened to the sales-clerk ramble on about pixels and HD and wiring… blah, blah blah. All I felt was pain. Pain of losing my new TV and the use of my left hand.
…but I digress…
That one simple, sneaky little rule of always wearing the wristband should have been stamped on the screen at all times!
C’mon – you know who you are – the person who doesn’t where the wristband thinking that they have complete control over the Wi controller… yeah right!
After playing for a while, your palms tend to start to sweat a bit... trust me. This brings Murphy’s Law to the forefront: “Anything that can possibly go wrong, usually does”. Oh that Murphy, such an optimist!
So you are guessing that the Wii controller slipped out of my hands and smashed the TV.. you would guess correct. What you think happened to my wrist was that I was playing so much I got Carpal Tunnel – well, you would be wrong.
…it was like a ballet…
“As the controller left my hand I could feel the cord brush against my wrist as if teasing me, judging me… mocking me. With a final push I stretched to grab for the controller and as the wrist strap grazed the tips of my fingers I managed to only bring down the dank air that surrounded my defeat. As the controller smashed through the glass panel of my new LCD HDTV, I could feel a pain shoot through my wrist like lightning hitting the ground. I smelled the burning television and felt the pain. It was a very surreal moment.
So, again I stroll through the same aisle, looking at this TV, listening to the sales-clerk yammer on – and all I could think about was how soon I would be healed so I could finally beat my son on our next gameday. I guess I’ll have to put in another call to the boys at motion plus and get me a new Wii controller, MotionPlus adapter.. and maybe some lessons.
