Nintendo Wii Zapper

A while ago, news came down the gadget wire that Nintendo was making the Wii Zapper, a special type of controller that would be perfect for shooter-style games. The controller is not an entirely separate apparatus, like the gun from the old school Nintendo Entertainment System, but it is a housing for the wireless Wiimote. As you can see, the trigger is in the right place, and the motion sensitive device is perfect to target the television. I can’t help but wonder if the Wiimote was built for this device.
It is now confirmed that not only are they putting out a cool shooter for the Wii, but it will also include a bonus game. Link’s Crossbow Training is based on the enormously popular Legend of Zelda series. In Crossbow Training, you play Link, main character from Zelda, and you’re involved in a Robin Hood type archery contest using crossbows. I am told the game uses stationary targets at the beginning, then goes on to moving ones and even has enemies.
There are other games that support the Wii Zapper including Medal of Honor Heroes, the popular World War II game that will feature an exclusive Arcade Mode, full single-player campaign, and support for up to 32 players. Another game supported by the Wii Zapper is Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles. This version of the now famous zombie fighter game explores elements from the first four Resident Evil games, and takes the players into the heart of Umbrella’s stronghold. There is also SEGA’s Ghost Squad, where players can shoot creepy things with the light gun feature.
The Wii Zapper will go on sale on November 19th, which will be just in time for Christmas. Believe it or not, it will only be for a small price for $19.99 USD. I suppose that’s pretty good considering it comes with a game that looks cool. I’m guessing the Wii Zapper is going to take video game players back to the day when the NES light gun was a source of entertainment for many games. I’m really looking forward to other titles we’ll see that will play with it.
Personally, I was surprised the Nintendo did not use the Wii Zapper to redo one of the most classic video games of all time: Duck Hunt. In fact, they should release the game with a T or M rating so we can really shoot and wound the annoying dog who laughs at us when we miss the ducks.
