Nirvana For The Writer's Soul
58A Global Writing Community
Are you a writer? I am. Can you imagine a community where writers from all over the world could come together and live in harmony? It would be a place where the writers could critique each other, offer each other encouragement, comments and tips to improve our skills. It would be a living reference book of sorts. It would give us each perspective on where we are from. It could also give us something that all the reference books in the world cannot give us now: unique insight into how other people of the world live and think.
It could help end the preconceived notions and prejudice that slant our thinking and our writing. It could do for us what all the governments of the world cannot currently do: join us together globally for a common goal, giving us -- us -- a chance to educate the world in a way that eluded the great leaders, historical heroes and educators of the past.
Wow…. Just imagine being part of a giant global think tank, to be able to contribute ideas and suggestions on how to make this a better world for us all -- all done while respecting each other and our individual viewpoints. While that sounds like Nirvana for the writer’s soul, what it really sounds like is Hubpages.com.
Changing The World
Can CindyVine in Nanjing, China show us --with a map -- how people of the US are perceived, giving us true direction in what we need to do to change that perception? That map was laugh-out-loud funny.
I am an American. Instead of seeing an insult, I saw an accurate representation about how the United States is perceived by a well-traveled citizen of the world. The accompanying article gives us even better insight into the same subject. That is useful knowledge, not only for writers, but also for our elected officials. In order to remain relevant to the world, we have to be respected.
Yet, on the flip side, by writing my own “hubs,” I can show Cindy that not all Americans are arrogant and high handed -- just our elected government officials and Rush Limbaugh. You see, we can help each other become more tolerant of each other through our community of writers.
Writers shape people’s perceptions by their written words. If, by being part of a global community of writers, we can help shed false ideas and images of our own little corner of the world, we really are changing the world for the better.
Embracing Our Differences
Haris Amin can also show us how his people in Iran think about the United States and he gives us, not only insight, but suggestions on how we can go about changing that. Just like most people in America are not arrogant, most people in Iran are not either. We are all people who rely on our respective governments and they do not always get it right. Evemurphy from Ottawa, Canada helps to show us that people in Iran are much the same as us emotionally by sharing poignant pictures of Iranian women and children enjoying life. She puts a face on the people of Iran.
Can Anamika S from Mumbai, India show us that her people are much like us in many interests in life even as she explains the differences? She shows us that the people of Mumbai are…. people -- just like us. They like to cook, they like to watch comedy movies and they have the same hopes and dreams for their families just like we do.
No Matter Where We Go, We Are Not Alone
Jen’s Solitude from New Jersey in the US gives evidence that the American people suffer from illnesses that cannot be cured too, like MS. Her struggle to live with a dehabilitating disease -- and to have the courage to share her struggles with MS with the world -- shows the people of the world that we all suffer. Unfortunately, no one and no country is immune to suffering.
If Fenella Fisher -- CindyVine’s alter ego in print -- decides to stop the world to pee in New Jersey in the next Fenella Fisher novel, she has access to people, like Jen’s Solitude, to give her directions to the nearest gas station. Mezo asks us to call, should we ever find ourselves in his native country of Egypt. Not that it is likely to happen, but if I am ever in Greece, I plan to stop by Sufidreamer’s for a glass of Ouzo in Sparti. Though I have to miss out this year, one of these days, I am going to get to a concert on shores of Lake Michigan to see White Summer, James A Watkins' rock band that only performs once a year these days.
Someday, I would like to share a bottle of red wine with badcompany99, our resident bad boy at Hub Pages in Belfast, Ireland, which is actually the land of my ancestors. I would love to eat a tomato sandwich --sprinkled with peppercorn, of course -- on the bank of a river in South Carolina with Teresa McGurk. Though I might either be in Ohio or Florida at any given time, I would willingly share a drink or sandwich with any of these amazing writers. Someday, I may have an opportunity to do just that. You see, we are now never really alone, no matter where we go.
A Living Breathing Reference Book
We can learn about numerology from Anamika S, how to make money on the internet from guidebaba, how to survive being fired from nazishnasim, and how it feels to have depression from shailini, along with how to cope with it. We have many resident computer experts, like eugie17, who write easy to read tips on how search engines work and how you can hop aboard. They also explain what meta tags and keyword tags are and how computer hard drives work. We literally have a living, breathing live reference book that we can go to about almost any subject imaginable.
We have great poetry by Tom Rubenoff and Erin Boote, from Pennsylvania, among many others, giving us culture. We have humorous hubs by blondepoet -- who obviously also writes poetry -- from Australia, and from badcompany99, giving us all a laugh when the burdens of the world seem too heavy to bear. We discuss our beliefs, our goals, our hopes and dreams through our hubs and we have people cheering us on to achieve those dreams.
We have professors, psychologists, doctors, nurses and lawyers. We have homemakers, retirees and students. We have actors; we have writers --both published and non. We have accountants, salemen and entrepreuneurs. We have the combined experience of the world at Hubpages.com.
A Global Think Tank
No longer do we have to rely on the world’s newspapers and journalists to tell us how to think and feel about other cultures. We have the people of the world at our fingertips. We find that the people of the US, just like the people of Iran, India, Ireland, Greece, Egypt and many other countries can all have something in common. We have Hub Pages.
We have the combined power of some of the world’s best and brightest as a global think tank, like Tom Koecke from the state of Washington, Sufidreamer in Greece, and Mark Knowles in France. We have many who are ex-pats of other places, like Misha, Russian born and living in metro Washington D.C., and Ivan the Terrible, US born and living in Spain, who have lived under more than one form of government, who are, perhaps, more qualified than some to explain the differences.
At Hubpages, the writers have the opportunity to come together in the forums to find real working solutions for some of our gravest problems. We discuss politics, the environment, war and peace. We gladly give up our knowledge and life's experiences to those who seek it.
Of course, we do not always agree, but those few who would be rude and obnoxious are soon evicted. At Hubpages, we settle our differences intelligently with humor, grace and understanding. We even occasionally agree to disagree. At Hubpages, we respect our friends and neighbors.
As writers, we might suggest that open and honest dialogue beats embargos and propaganda in our dealings with other world governments any day. We might suggest that even two people cannot come together in compromise without rationally talking out our differences. How can we expect the world to?
We Are Making A Difference
Our governments and our people are all dealing with some of the same problems, only from different viewpoints. We all have to worry about our environment and make the future of Earth as sustainable for the future as it has been for the past. There is poverty, disease and unrest among all the people of the world. Globally, we at HubPages have the means to make a difference in our environment in a way that the politicians of the world cannot. We have the power to reach out to the people, befriend them and educate them, just as they are educating us.
Yes, we really do have the power that eluded our great historians, leaders and educators of the past, thanks to the internet that links us globally. Thanks to our little community at HubPages -- population over 76,000 and counting -- we are now neighbors and friends. We are all making our difference -- one hub at a time.

My goodness you have an amazing eye for detail and recollection. Can I have your memory for just one day, I promise I'll return it. LOL
You could warn a person, but that objection aside, I do love the way you made so many hubbers more real to me.
Anyone new to hubpages who wonders why those who have been here so long have so many fans, can get a clue just by reading this hub. I imagine they will be happy to see how they appear in the eyes of the others and that they have such a positive influence and leave such a positive example.
I know you're sick of hearing it from me, but WELL DONE! :)
~Jen
Paper Moon -- I think that is the best compliment that I've gotten as a hubber. Thank you so much for that and for joining my fan club. I did follow your link and, and yes, it was quite a moving hub.
Jen -- what can I say, except that I will ever get sick of hearing that from you lol. As you know, your technical expertise made it possible, so I thank you for your contribution. Sorry about not giving the warning that you would be featured lol. I almost sent you a preview, but thought I might do better to spring it on you :)
Paper Moon directed me here, and I'm so glad he did! Lovely hub -- and not just because I get a mention (thanks for that, by the way!). This is a delightful look at some of the great reasons we choose to be here. I know I value our community a great deal. Next time you're in the area, I'll make a few sandwiches!
Hi Connie! Thanks for mentioning me. I am flattered! Many have called me 'divine' or even 'goody two shoes' because of my mannerisms and the way I am. Discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, culture etc is something i have never done in my whole life. I adapt what is good and leave what is bad and always like to hear two sides of the story before forming an opinion. However, I agree with you fully that We all are similar which ever part of the World we belong to.
Majority of the Hubbers you mentioned are my favorites too. I guess you are going to be one of my favorites too (not because you mentioned me) as a very good writer who can express things positively and make a difference in others life.
What a wonderful place to be just a "swirl of colors"
dori
Like most of it myself.
Thank you all for the comments.
Anamika, I sent you a return email. I also like to hear both sides of the story. Some people in my family just love to leave a part or two out (namely their part!), but I have to agree that it is best to know the whole story.
Goldentoad and Fortune Rep, thank you for stopping by. I do appreciate it.
Teresa, I have been reading your hubs for some time. Of course, I loved the tomato mystery, as you can see by this hub. Also, tomato sandwiches have been a favorite since I was a very young child! I hope we get to do that one day.
Really, though, as you can all see, I do see something very cool here and I am enjoying it thoroughly. Thank you all for the encouragement here.
Connie, what an excellent, well-written hub! Thanks for the mention and thanks to Paper Moon for directing me here. Am staying with family at the moment, so my internet usage is very limited, but will be able to get more involved in hubbing next week. Nirvana for Hubbers, very very clever!
That's such a well-thought hub dear (and don't even think for a minute that Im saying this 'cause you mentioned me! nah nah nah *shakes finger* ). Like Cindy, PaperMoon directed me here too. Glad to meet you! :)
I'm glad I followed nazish here! HP really is an amazing place...suddenly one knows how others across the world are thinking, and underneath all the superfluous differences, we're really not all that different! :)
You do know I would love for that day to happen x
I've been working on this for some time. One of the first things I noticed when I came to hubpages was that most (of course, not all) people really respect others opinions in the comment sections on the individual hubs and to a lesser point, but still polite, on the forums. That was such a refreshing change from the comments on other websites that it stood out. It is one of my most favorite things about hubpages.
All of you are great writers and I am proud to be connected with you all through hubpages. Thank you for your support.
Oh Connie thanks so much for the mention that was fabulous!!!
Thank you for stopping by to read it!
Connie,
I am honored to be mentioned by you. This is a great Hub with terrific thoughts emanating from a munificent mind. "I would love to change the world." "If I could change the world." "It's a wonderful world."
Well James, though the last few years have been a bit rough for me, I find that, on the whole, I look at the world in a positive light and back at my own life in a positive way (which, on the whole makes me a happier person than some). I could take the few negatives about hubpages and write a hub about that, but then, I couldn't include you!
Aw shucks . . . :)
I am sorry that you have had a rough time of it.
Like you, I really enjoy the Hub Pages Community.
Lovely Hub, Connie, and thanks for the kind mention - you are more than welcome to visit and drink Ouzo anytime :)
There really are some great minds on here, and I learn something new every day - I knew little of the US a few months ago, so it is nice to read the opinions of ordinary Americans, rather than media caricatures.
Like James, I hope that you are through the rough times.
Knowing that what we write makes a difference is one of the reasons I've stayed on hubpages. I first became aware of this when I realized how much I had learned from others here.
Thumbs up Connie. This community rocks, great minds, great expression. I love the global perspective we get here.
Thanks, Sufi. I do hope that I get to Greece for that Ouzo sometime. I love to travel. Still, the main thing is that, at hubpages, we are changing each other's perceptions of each other. That is pretty much what I was trying to get at. The media does distort the voice of the people. I am not so naive that I think all the people in the world are good and even that all the people at hubpages are good, just that I believe that MOST people in the world are good, but we usually don't hear much about them. Thanks also for the kind thoughts and comments, Sufi!
Jerilee, ah, a person after my own heart. I do want to make a difference with my writing and I truly think we are at hubpages. See how Sufi just said he is learning more about Americans? I think if we took away our labels of where we are from, we would think most people are from the same place. In other words, we are more alike than we are different. That makes one of the biggest differences ever: breaking down barriers of prejudice that exist within us all about peceptions of other people in other lands.
Jewel thanks for visiting :) Globally, we do have a perspective that we previously lacked. For writers, hubpages is a great place to gain new material, research and perspective on the people of the world. You are right. It rocks!
I'm delighted to have found you only because you found me first: That seems so pleasantly symmetrical!
And I couldn't agree with you more about places like HubPages where writers, thinkers, doers, poets, and madcaps come together from every nook and cranny of the world to share and compare their views.
I see, too, that we are both motivated by the idea of teaching, which makes you instantly sympatico. I can hardly wait to dig into more of your hubs, Connie.
Mindfield, I am delighted to have found you! I am also delighted to see that we are like-minded when it comes to seeing the real relevance of Hubpages. So many people just look at it as a way to make money. I can see the beauty of it. We not only are able to read great articles that educate us, we have access to the experts -- the authors -- who wrote them. There is a vast knowledge pool here at Hubpages. Just think, I have access to an editor where I never had that before.
Global Art !
Thanks, Jamison, what a great compliment!
I have read some truly great Hubs since joining the community here, but this one ranks right up there at the top! What a great outlook, and a wonderful way of reminding us all that we CAN be better than we are. Working together instead of pointing fingers and pulling at each other.
Loved this hub!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read it, Duchess, and also for commenting. I do like to think positively and Hubpages does have a lot of possibilities, I think. The greatest thing is that it is a global community and we can exchange ideas with others from far off places. That was and still is the greatest thing for me about Hubpages.
Very thoughtful and thought provoking and I cannot stand Rush Limbaugh either! It would be nice if all of us could be in one place, we can only dream. :)
Thank you, AE. Most writers are dreamers, aren't they? Thanks for reading it.

This is truly a world class hub. I read a hub by gr8archer from Pakistan. http://hubpages.com/hub/Pakistanies--Terrorists-or
It inspired me to no ends. I agree that HubPages is a world class writers forum, and you, in turn, are a world class hubber. :)
