No Compassion from Dog Owner

I've helped raise quite a few kittens in the last 5 years or so, and let me tell you, they have been a chore to control.  But just recently, like this weekend, I've decided to stop raising them do to other people who either don't like cats, or owners of dogs that allow their dogs to kill cats without caring that the cat has someone taking care of it.

Let me begin from when I was about ten years old.  I used to have a cat, she was all black and outside all the time.  Now, I did not technically own her, but I named her Susie and fed her what I could and played with her when she was around.  She was also clean and free of diseases [that I knew of] because I never contracted anything from her.  Any way, one day I woke up and went outside to check on her.  It was summer, early in the morning, and at that time there were two rott's that were running loose around the neighborhood and ventured into my back yard.  To my shock and astonishment, these two dogs got hold of my cat and made a chew toy out of her.  Just to remind you, I was about 10 at the time and watching my cat be ripped apart by two mean dogs.  Not a pretty site, at all!  My mom didn't really care about the cat, but she chased the dogs out of our yard and disposed of her body and consoled me the best way she knew how.

So, this weekend, the day before Memorial Day, I had the same thing happen, different dogs though.  I'm outside smoking a cigarette, my kitten, had by my momma cat who is now missing, was outside too and roaming around the yard, curious like all cats, along with the rest of my family including my 8 year old daughter, my son was inside.

Well, my cat sometimes liked to wander into our neighbor's back yard, which from what I understand is a big no-no and have tried to control it.  But before I knew it, I noticed that the kitten was struggling to get back over the fence that she'd crawled through.  Instantly, I started yelling, "Dogs, the dogs have her!"

I started banging on the neighbors fence, my brother and husband tried to climb over the fence to stop the dogs from attacking.  The dogs were pits and I know what those kind of dogs to a weaker animal just like rots.  Then when both the men realized the kitten was dead, we went around the other side of the house to get to their back yard to get met by the "lady of the house".  I put that in quotes because she didn't act like a lady.

So my husband got back there to get our kitten, this girl is yelling at me and my sister-in-law to get out of her yard or she'll call the cops.  Then she started ranting about how my cats are always in her back yard and from there I didn't hear anything else but my own words and the words from my sister-in-law.

What I said back to her was, "I'm sorry that my cats been getting into your yard, but she was just killed by your dogs.  All we want is to get her and dispose of her properly, there is no need to get the cops involved.  None of that is really necessary and you should show a little compassion for a kitten that was loved by all of us!"

Instead of calming down, she kept screaming for us to get out of her yard which set of my in-law enough that I had to hold her back until we saw the mangled body of our kitten being carried by my husband.

So, we went back to our house and disposed of the dead kitten, we also had to console my scared and distraught daughter who had heard the attack, my son came out after the fact.  And after consoling the two of them, I couldn't believe how inconsiderate that "lady" had been toward us, and she wasn't much older than me.  But the damage had been done and there was nothing else to be said to the neighbors.

To end the story, that "lady" called the cops, but they didn't do much since the incident was already done and over with, we weren't questioned or fined.  But I know now not to move next to anyone who hates cats!
