Technical Terms

The technical term for no-lye and lye relaxers are:

  • Sodium Hydroxide-Lye Relaxer
  • Calcium Hydroxide-No-Lye Relaxer

Lye Relaxer

Sodium Hydroxide is widely used in the salon because of it's superior straightening of the hair in the proper skilled hands. In the professionals hand this is the perfect chemical. You can tell this type because it comes in a form that does not need to be activated with a mixable liquid.

Many have tried to use it in the home and became shocked when their hair started to dry and break out due to inexperience and training. The bad name is now created! Lye is Bad!

Firstly all chemical are bad in the wrong hands. They should always be used with great care. We don't stop eating when our butts get big or we develop health risk and call eating bad, do we? No, we rather learn how to use with caution.

No-Lye Relaxer

Calcium Hydroxide used more in salons because of pressure from non professionals. You can tell this type because it need two parts to work the relaxer and it's activator. The straightening process nowadays is so much better with some of the new no-lye's and will last if treated properly.

However no-lye relaxers give a wonderful straight appearance in the first three weeks, then later the hair start breaking and dryness sets in leaving the client confused. This is because calcium dries out the hair if not de-calcified. Most times placing breakage blames on other treatment because of the delayed breakage.

Why Decalcifying Shampoo?

Calcium is very drying in the long run and has to be neutralized with a de-calcifying shampoo. Let me repeat! De-calcifying shampoo. I have called many companies and asked why they don't include it with the kit. I did not receive a great response. You have to search to find this type of shampoo! How crazy it that!?

"Many stylist nowadays don't do the extensive training we did years ago, now it's all about the hairstyle. Hey, you can buy hair, is the attitude these days. I don't have a problem with that but let's take care of the hair we do have first....OK ,OK I was venting wasn't I? Sorry, I'm OK now."

You definitely know the difference now and now understand why you have mysterious breakage all the time.

FYI:Organic Root Stimulate Shampoo is a moisturising and de-calcifying shampoo!

I use no-lye relaxer and I've always wondered why my hair becomes brittle and dry after a couple of weeks after I've relaxed it. Thank you so much for letting me know about using decalcifying shampoo!!
