Staying Focused to Avoid Internet Information Overload

It can be challenging for an online entrepreneur to stay focused in the midst of hundreds of emails promising the next best Internet marketing strategies. I used to suffer from information overload, but now I'm the Online Productivity Queen!

The most important things I've learned about being productive online are that having the following in place helps any Internet entrepreneur avoid Internet information overload.

  1. Focus

  2. Clear direction

  3. Taking action
  4. Accountability System

If an online entrepreneur has no clear vision as to what their online goals are her or she can aimlessly surf online all day with the hope to find the next best Internet marketing strategies.

Below are several tips to help you avoid Internet information overload and become a super productive online marketer.

Step 1 - Remaining Focused to Avoiding Internet Information Overload

Remaining focused entails setting goals effectively.

1. Set Clear Goals and Map Out Your Week Every Sunday.

What types of activities must you perform in order to reach your goals? Write them down and categorize them (i.e. Money Producing, Relationship Building etc.)

2. Prioritize from the weekly list and set daily goals. What's the most important task you can start TODAY?

Set no more than 2 big tasks for the day. Start working on the bigger tasks and knock them out first before moving on to other things. If you don't you can easily get sidetracked by email, social networking, or Internet surfing.

Jot your "To Do" list somewhere visible i.e on your personal planner or online planner where you can stay focused.

3. Reward Yourself: Once you get one task completed take a break. Exercise, meditate, or watch 30 minutes of something enjoyable to refresh your mind and remain sane! ;-) I got this great idea from book "The Now Habit" by Dr. Neil Fiore.

Step 2 - Moving in a Clear Direction to Avoid Information Overload

Your direction is determined by your goal-setting.

An Internet entrepreneur must become an effective goal-setter.

Select and work on marketing funnels you have talent for.

For instance if you are a great writer, use HubPages or Squidoo to add value and link back to your blog or website.

If your goal is to create content and utilize Ezine Articles, Forum Marketing and Squidoo to create back-links to your blog or website and you decide to skim an E-book on Craig's List - when you clearly know nothing about writing effective ads or are unfamiliar with posting rules - you are NOT moving in the right direction.

If you want to add Craiglist to your marketing activities then make sure you've achieved your goals elsewhere before learning how to implement other Internet marketing techniques.

Another useful tip is to have your goals where you can see them and stick to them! I keep mine in my paper planner.

Consistently taking action and moving in the right direction of your goals will help you avoid information overload because the more you are doing the less you are researching and browsing (or checking your email to learn about Craigslist in the above example).

Moving in that clear direction will also help you become and effective online marketer.

Step 3 - Taking Guided ACTION

Having clear goals and direction will help you take guided ACTION.

Taking action is what will make you super successful. When you know what your marketing plan is and all the steps you will take in order to get you from point A to point B you have LESS incentive to check your email inbox to learn the next best Internet marketing strategy to move you forward in your business.

As you are writing your "to do" list and checking off what you are accomplishing it gives you more momentum to continue taking action.

When you are busy taking ACTION you have NO TIME for frivoulous web surfing!

And that means...BYE BYE Information Overload!

Step 4 - An Accountability System

Having an Accountability System also helps to help you avoid the unimportant.

I personally have an accountability partner whom I check in with every day as well as a mastermind group.

An accountability parnter is someone who is as motivated as yourself to reach certain goals. Online forms are a great place to find accountability partners - that's where I found mine!

You can also hire someone to hold you accountable.

Things to Avoid

The following are things to avoid so that you don't get sucked into the Internet marketing information black-hole...

Don't's

1. When doing research don't attempt to examine every piece of data available. Pick the top 3 resources and tackle one at a time.

2. Don't waste endless hours trying to do something that you have no knowledge of. Save time by visiting forums and asking for help. It's a good way to network with others that compliment your skills set. You can also develop friendships and possibly open up the door to future Joint Venture Partnerships.

3. Don't check email often. Check it only in between breaks or after you've patted yourself on the back for getting a good start on something or finishing something up.

4. Don't subscribe to a million lists with one email. If you are subscribing to many other lists you are not spending enough time building yours!

5. Unsubscribe from any list that you are not receiving value from. If the person happens to pitch all of the time and it's stuff you're not interested in unsubscribe.

6. Unsubscribe from any list that although has good information, is not what you are looking for at the present.

7. Use an RSS Reader to easily reference your favorite blogs. I use Mozilla Firefox and the Firefox Sage Extension works well for me now.

Outstanding advice Dali... I could not agree with you more. People can get extremley frustrated in this industry if they take on to many projects at once. The learner curve can be stagering!

What do I do first? Who should I listen to? What is the best training material to start with? What gurus do you follow?

I hear that daily :)
