The occurrence of “man boobs” is due to the condition called gynecomastia. This is the abnormal enlargement of the breasts of men. This condition can come with or without milk production.
“Man boobs” is fairly common among men. It is a physiologic occurrence that arises during puberty. During this stage, half of males experience the enlargement of one or both of their breasts. This condition is also common among old men and is often associated when adults gain weight.
Man boobs are generally temporary and benign. It is believed to be caused by hormonal imbalance and medications having estrogens or steroids. It can also be caused by a chronic liver disease or a chronic kidney disease. The failure of the liver causes the body to inactivate the circulation of estrogen.
Gynecomastia tends to disappear in a matter of months, but if not, it can be corrected surgically for purposes of cosmetic or psychological reasons.
Men with such condition suffer psychological distress because of the embarrassment and humiliation brought by their physical appearance. Men with enlarged breasts tend to hate their body and risk their relationship with themselves.
Although most man boobs are benign, at some instances, these can be the first sign of a serious medical disorder like a testicular tumor. It is best for men to consult medical professionals once they find their breasts enlarging. In rare cases, gynecomastia is caused by a hormone-secreting tumor of the lung, breast or other body organs. In these situations, biopsy must be performed to check the presence of any cancer. Nevertheless, patients with Klinefelter’s syndrome are more likely to develop this condition.
Because most cases of man boobs do not exhibit risk factors, treatment for such condition is possible. The choices of treatment for such case depend on a number of factors. One factor to be considered is the cause of the disorder. If the disorder is induced by drugs or medication, discontinuance of the drug or the agent may be all that is needed to treat gynecomastia.
If this disorder arises at puberty, it is best that one waits for a while since most patients of the condition lose the enlarged breasts spontaneously. The treatment option of man boobs caused by hyperthyroidism, acute hepatic disorders or hypogonadism is therapy for these health problems to solve the enlarged breasts disorder.
The next factor to be considered is the length of time that the disorder has been present. Generally, gynecomastia requires treatment for pain and tenderness, serious humiliation and embarrassment and emotional distress.
The most effective treatment, as men believe, is surgery. This is the first step to healing both the physical and emotional pains brought by the disorder. In surgery, the glandular tissue of the breast is removed through periareolar incision. Patients who have large amounts of adipose tissue in their subglandular area require the use of suction-assisted lipectomy at the time of surgery in order to improve the cosmetic results of the operation.
Aside from surgery, patients of gynecomastia are advised to undergo psychological therapy to redress the organization of their lives and their relationships within themselves.
