No Passion?
49Do you have a passion and does it really matter?
It seems to be
so important these days to have a passion. If you don't you are doomed
to an unfulfilled life on the never ending treadmill of going nowhere.
For me the question "what is your passion?" is like trying to answer
"which chocolate do you like best", I love them all and depending on
the day depends on which one is my favourite. So if you don't already
have a passion can anyone find it and does it really matter if you
can't?
For me this question became a focus when I decided to
make a go of working from home. I had no idea what business to start
and so undertook some research over the Internet
determining how successful work from home businesses had started out. I
found most suggested I start my search for the perfect work from home
business by identifying my passions. Oh O......... I'm not really
passionate about anything? Does this mean I am doomed to fail at my
start-up?
Sure I have interests but most of these only last a
couple of months and then it's onto the next one.... Now what? Does
this mean that I am never going to identify a successful work from home
idea because I have no one passion? After many weeks of trying
desperately to identify "my passion" and coming up with nothing I have
decided that everyone is unique and what works for one does not
automatically work for others. So I decided to modify the search for a
passion to suit my personality.
I undertook an exercise of
opening my mind to what it was that made me happy and I recommend it to
anyone who is seeking some direction. By simply being aware of which
activities make you smile and which are tedious can empower you to do
more of the stuff that makes you smile. For me a mind set change from
"passions" to "interests" allowed me to relax into coming up with ideas
of things I enjoyed. It took the pressure off trying to identify
activities I could see myself immersed
in 30 years from now - too far ahead for my fickle personality. Instead
I concentrated on what I enjoyed today and which activities I like
better than others, even which I disliked least. This ongoing list
turned out to be both amusing and very useful for putting together some
ideas for a home business.
Not having a passion, or being able
to identity a single passion is not the be all and end all of a
contented life or for finding an idea to start a business. Seeking what
makes you smile today on the other hand was a good start for me!
