One City Made Money Hosting The Olympics

Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and under Mitt Romney's direction the games netted the city a profit of $78 million, an anomaly in today's Olympic games. It was made possible by the great number of volunteer workers.
President Obama went to Denmark to help Chicago land the Olympics, but Chicago lost out to Japan and Brazil. Chicago is broke. How would they have paid for it anyway? Mayor Richard Daily's unkind remarks to Rio are seen as reason for Chicago's loss.

Obama Has Proven One Thing: He's A Big Spender

No Doubt About It, Power Plants Do Pollute

We've all seen the smoke. Power plants do pollute the atmosphere. But it is the cost we pay for electrical energy. Obama is making that cost go up dramatically.
We've all seen the smoke. Power plants do pollute the atmosphere. But it is the cost we pay for electrical energy. Obama is making that cost go up dramatically.

Plenty of Obama Lies To Go Around

The Environmental Protection Agency has no right taxing for Greenhouse emissions when Democrats haven’t passed it into law.

It sounds fishy as can be. What’s the big hurry? The House has already passed President Obama’s Cap and tax bill, so now it’s just waiting for Senate action to become the biggest tax on middle class Americans ever.

Lie Number One: This, from an administration whose president promised no new taxes on anyone making less than a quarter million dollars a year. Whoever he was trying to fool is now going to pay a lot more in utility bills than before he came to Washington. No, he probably won’t call that a tax increase, but the result’s the same. Why wasn’t Obama completely forthcoming with the American voters?

A tax is a tax is a tax. If the government does something to cause you to pay out more money in utility bills, it’s a tax. I don’t care if they merely call it a higher utility bill. Indirectly it’s a tax on the people and, thus, Obama once again, has lied to Americans.

If he is taxing farmers, utility companies, or car makers it ends up being paid for by us consumers, in the form of higher food, electric, or car prices. If it acts like a tax increase, that’s what it is. It’s money out of our pockets into the pockets of big Federal Government. Simple as that.

I’ll promise you one thing. Obama won’t get re-elected on such disingenuous politics. Consumers are getting wise to this two-faced man and they are angry. If Americans’ utility bills necessarily go sky high as Obama promised very late in the campaign, and few heard it or understood, are wages going to go “necessarily sky high?”

No, of course not.

The second thing I don’t like about this the timing. Cap and Trade is not yet law. Feeling elections coming in 2010 and 2012, the Senate may never pass cap and tax. There is a good reason cap and tax has not passed the Senate and it’s political. America doesn’t want it. We’re suffering through our worst recession in the past fifty years. Nine point eight percent of Americans are unemployed. That figure is sixteen percent if you take into account those who were trying to find a job, couldn’t, and quit looking. Jobless claims went up a percentage point last week. There were 262,000 new claims for unemployment benefits last week, an increase in claims appearing at a time when Democrats say we are coming out of the recession.

That’s Lie Number Two:

We’re like in quicksand and with every week, jobless numbers don’t get better it is harder and harder to convince America that the recession is almost over.

As if you don’t have enough bad news, here’s another one:

Obama flew two jet planes to Denmark – most presidents would take only one plane, or they wouldn't go at all because it’s not national business. In Denmark the Olympic Committee eliminated the Chicago bid, despite the amount of lobbying the Obamas did. I guess his charisma doesn't go over as well there as with democrats in his own country. So much for becoming king of the world, Barak. It was a big deal. Now Japan and Brazil are the finalists. The committee will decide which city gets the Summer Olympics in 2016 and I could care less that it's not Chicago. Expenses are what I worry about. Those jets don’t run on water? The fuel alone to operate one jet costs well over a million dollars. So he needs two planes and two million dollars to say, maybe a five-minute promo in behalf of his home town? I don’t think this was a wise trip. It further proves Obama's lack of wisdom in so many other areas as well. And two planes? What conspicuous consumption! And what about his indiscriminate doubling of pollution?

Fuel’s only the beginning cost. What about the cost of the crew to maintain and fly the planes? How about the secret service men protecting the president and his guests on one plane and Mrs. Obama and Oprah Winfrey on the other? It’s a big waste of taxpayer money at a time when the country’s broke. Worse, it’s a misuse of taxpayer money.

In the first place, Obama has no right to even think he can use Federal money to enrich land developers like felon Tony Rezko or slumlords like his close friend Valorie Jarrett - all in a failed effort to obtain the Olympics for Chicago. Theoretically the Olympics should have brought in a lot of world visitors whom Chicagoans hoped would help them get their town out of debt. But historically, it doesn’t work that way.

Salt Lake City’s Winter Games are the only Olympics that have shown a profit in recent years. That’s because of Mitt Romney who used a lot of volunteer workers. Romney ran fiscally sound games and ended up rewarding the city with a profit of $78 million.

Don’t count on Chicago’s wastrel Richardl Daily to save money doing anything. The problems would have just began had Chicago prevailed. It would have been a ridiculous fiasco and you and I would have ended up bailing out Chicago.

Cities should fix their own problems. The entire nation shouldn’t be involved. But cities like LA, Chicago and New York are run by big spenders, so when they are through they want some little farmer in Iowa pay for it, to absorb higher taxes so they can pay for inefficiency, waste, and graft in those places like Chicago and LA?

Why is Chicago so much in debt? Because Mayor John Daily, a Democrat, doesn’t know how to run a city in a fiscally sound manner. Just as Barak Obama doesn’t know how to run a nation without obscenely running up the debt and his two-jet trip to Europe is just one of many examples of his failure to keep a lid on things. Haven’t they heard of balancing the budget and stopping all spending when you’ve run out of money?

Obama showed how much wisdom he has by pulling another boner. He ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to forget that the Cap and Trade bill is not yet law. Here we are, knee deep in recession and unwilling to wait for Congress to act, the Obama administration announced Wednesday that it was moving forward on new rules to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from hundreds of power plants and large industrial facilities.

Lie Number Three, Mr. Obama

This will result in millions of dollars in new taxes going from the utilities to Washington. Because utilities are pass-through businesses, guess who will end up paying for the new taxes? You got it. You and I, in higher utility bills. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a new tax on the middle and low class in America. Didn’t Obama promise no new taxes on us little guys as a promise to get elected? A man who lies doesn’t deserve to get re-elected.

Washington Post writer John Broder said President Obama prefers a comprehensive legislative approach to regulating emissions and stemming global warming, not a piecemeal application of rules, and that he is deeply committed to passage of a climate bill this year. If that’s true, why do the end run around Congress which is dishonest?

Obama has authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to begin moving toward regulation. He thinks he can goad lawmakers into reaching an agreement. See, if you can’t get something like health care or cap and tax, what progressives in Washington do is regulate it as if the law was already passed. Then after people are abusive to you for taxing them to death already, it will seem easier to pass the actual bill. That’s not criminal, it’s just dishonest, and what’s a little dishonesty among fellow countrymen, eh?

Lie Four For Obama.

Observers believe Obama ordered these high taxes on utilities now to prove to the world that America is serious about producing an international agreement to combat global warming which you and I know doesn’t really exist. It’s just another lie, to goad lawmakers into reaching an agreement. Why all the emphasis on looking good? Can’t we take looking bad?

Interesting, those United Nations talks will also be in Copenhagen, in December. They are intended to produce an international agreement to combat global warming. I’ll bet you a dinner they don’t. Have they forgotten India and China, the world’s largest polluters? They won’t even be there and the U.S. shouldn't either.

Greenhouse effect

The greenhouse effect is the process in which the emission of infrared radiation by the atmosphere warms a planet's surface.

See also: Earth & Climate

The proposed rules, which could take effect as early as 2011, would place the greatest burden on 400 power plants, new ones and those undergoing substantial renovation, by requiring them to prove that they have applied the best available technology to reduce emissions or face penalties.

Ms. Jackson described the proposal as a common-sense rule tailored to apply to only the largest facilities — those that emit at least 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year — which are responsible for nearly 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

The rule would not, as critics contend, cover “every cow and Dunkin’ Donuts,” Ms. Jackson said. Thank goodness for that.

The move was timed to come on the same day that two Democratic senators, John F. Kerry of Massachusetts and Barbara Boxer of California, introduced global warming and energy legislation that faces a steep climb to passage this year.

The prospect of E.P.A. regulation of greenhouse gas emissions has generated fear and deep divisions within American industry. Some major utilities, oil companies and other heavy emitters are working closely with Congress to ensure that a climate bill would circumvent E.P.A. regulation by substituting a market-based cap-and-trade system. Others, led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers, have worked against legislation and threatened to sue if the E.P.A. tries to impose controls on emissions of heat-trapping gases.

Ms. Jackson said the proposed rule had been written to exempt small businesses, farms, large office buildings and other relatively small sources of carbon dioxide emissions. But under the rule proposed Wednesday, the E.P.A. would assume authority for the greenhouse gas emissions of 14,000 coal-burning power plants, refineries and big industrial complexes that produce most of the nation’s greenhouse gas pollution.

A typical coal-burning power plant emits several million tons of carbon dioxide a year. The 25,000-ton limit is comparable to the emissions from burning 131 rail cars of coal or the annual energy use of about 2,200 homes, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. That seems like a pretty low threshold to me, but what do I know? I’m just a hub writer.

Senator James M. Inhofe, Republican of Oklahoma and an opponent of global warming legislation, called the proposed rule “a backdoor energy tax” that circumvents Congress and violates the terms of the Clean Air Act.

Scott Segal, a utility lobbyist with the law firm Bracewell & Giuliani in Washington, said the rule should not be used to rush Congress into passing a poorly drafted bill.

“Even if the Senate does not act,” Mr. Segal said, “he can legitimately say to other nations, ‘We are taking action on a unilateral basis. What are you doing?’ ”

La, te, dah! What lamebrain thought up that excuse for taxing Americans?

The proposal, long anticipated and highly controversial, is the government’s first step toward regulating greenhouse gases from stationary sources. The E.P.A. has already proposed an ambitious program to restrict such emissions from cars and trucks. The agency published the proposed vehicle emission rule this month; it is expected to take effect next spring.

Ms. Jackson’s proposal would require facilities emitting at least 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide and five other pollutants a year to obtain construction and operating permits.

We have to assume the Federal Government wouldn’t issue those permits unless you were one of their favored few. This law opens the door to fraud and the paying of favorites, in my opinion. It could be fraud of monumental proportions, the likes of which we have already seen in Obama’s desire to reward Valarie Jarrett with the Chicago games that will help her slumlord business.

The other gases are methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.

The threshold is 100 times higher than that required for other types of pollutants like sulfur dioxide that have more acute health and environmental effects.

Ms. Jackson said that while the proposed rule would affect about 14,000 large sources of carbon dioxide, most were already subject to clean-air permitting requirements because they emit other pollutants.

By raising the standard to 25,000 tons, the new rule exempts millions of smaller sources of carbon dioxide emissions like bakeries, soft drink bottlers, dry cleaners and hospitals.

Industry groups reacted quickly, challenging the E.P.A.’s authority to use the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gases and questioning Ms. Jackson’s power to lower the threshold for regulation.

Charles T. Drevna, president of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association, said that the emission of greenhouse gases was a global problem and that it was pointless to regulate only some sources.

“This proposal incorrectly assumes that one industry’s greenhouse gas emissions are worse than another’s,” Mr. Drevna said. “E.P.A. lacks the legal authority to categorically exempt sources that exceed the Clean Air Act’s major source threshold from permitting requirements, and this creates a troubling precedent for any agency actions in the future.”

Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t we just leave Oprah, Michelle, and Barak in Denmark for three months and save America several million dollars to fly them back again in December? He’s worth more to us away from the Oval Office than in it. All he does when he’s in the White House is propose new spending bills. When do the balanced budget and savings bills get written and proposed?

“We are not going to continue with business as usual,” Lisa P. Jackson, the E.P.A. administrator, said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters. “We have the tools and the technology to move forward today, and we are using them.”

That’s sweet. You have tools and technology, but haven’t you forgotten something, Lisa? How about having the authority to do this? “Oh, Oh, I forgot that.”

Great article.

The Europeans did cap and trade and it did not amount to much. The way they have cap and trade tax system here, every year the amount almost doubles. Within a few years we will not be able to live because of this high tax. It could shut the country down.

Keep on Hubbing!

Thank you eovery for your comment. Why won't the current administration look at history? I don't think they're scholars. Not too smart. History is a subject that our chief community organizer, Barak Obama, and his fellow communists did not take in college. They are rudderless because they don't believe in God. Obama runs around like a man who doesn't know what he's doing. Those are Lawrence Eagleberger's words and my sentiments. Don White

Thanks, overy, for your comments. I hope some sense comes into this man's head pretty soon - before your statement about high taxes and shutting down the country becomes a reality. Why won't this man THINK for a change what he's doing to the country? He's a dictator, too set on building his own ego instead of improving anything. Someone wrote "the EGO has landed" when he came back defeated from Chicago - Rio got the Olympic bid and Chicago fell flat on its face despite the Obamas being there with Oprah in two of our jets, not just one.

I agree with former diplomat Lawrence Eagleberger who says the problem with Obama is he is not disciplined enough to do a good job running the country. He is here one day, there the next. He says Obama doesn't know what he's doing, and I totally agree. Eagleberger was a career diplomat, who served briefly as the United States Secretary of State under President George H. W. Bush. Previously, he had served in lesser capacities under Presidents Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. I think Barak Obama would be a great sportscaster, ambassador to Iran or to Africa, but not president. Don White
