How-To: Firmware Upgrade Your Nokia N80 to N80ie

It took me a good long time getting the firmware update on my stock Nokia N80 phone. Hopefully this will help those poor, pitiful people who are having trouble getting up to speed to the N80 Internet Edition.

This tutorial should also apply to other Nseries phones such as the N93 but I have not tested the method on these devices so try them at your own risk!

Here's the short version of the steps:

1) Install NSS 2) Change Product Code on Phone 3) Backup 4) Install NSU 5) Update Firmware

More in the long entry. And I mean REALLY long.

Nokia 7610] [Long Battery life]

Charge your devices battery 10-14 hours at the first time, after you buy it. - Always charge your device switched off if possible. This makes the charging time shorter and helps the battery "calibrate". - Start charging when battery is almost or totally empty. - Finish charging only when the battery is full.

Thease rules are increasing time between the charges and increasing battery lifetime as well

Other Reviews: iPhone vs. N95 vs. Ocean, iPhone wins?

An Associated Press writer "reviewed" the iPhone, N95, and Ocean (Helio) - all at the same time. The result is the article titled "Review: Apple's IPhone Takes Other Luxury Cell Phones to School".

The bottom line of the guy's argument is that the iPhone is incredibly easy to use, while the N95's user interface is horrendous. And any mention of the Ocean seems to have been done as an afterthought. Actually, why the Ocean is even included in the review is beyond me. I definitely wouldn't call it a luxury phone.

7 tips to extend your battery life

When it comes to batteries it looks like we are at the same point we were 10 years ago. Batteries don't last longer than a few days. But to be fair to the battery designers we have to admit that nowadays' smartphones require much more energy than phones 10 years ago. We can't really compare them but what we can do is use them with more care. Here are a few good tips how to go about it:

1. Turn off your Bluetooth - I find Bluetooth to be the most power hungry application; turn it off when you don't use it

2. Disable sounds and vibrating alert - you don't really need keypad tones to be on, do you? What about vibrating? It is surely useful on the meetings or in a cinema but most of time you'll do just fine without it; I usually set up a vibrating profile to be used in places like cinema or theatre and in all other profiles I have vibrating turned off

3. Brightness - lower the brightness of your screen; not too low, otherwise you'll destroy your vision

4. Setting the Power saver time-out and the Light time-out to the low values will help too (you'll find them in the display settings)

5. If you are not using an application switch it off - you'll get a list of all active applications by long pressing the menu button; this is a general rule that can be applied to any device

6. Games - it's fun to play games on your way to school but they are power-hungry beasts; I can't tell you not to play games but think about your battery when you are playing

7. Turn off your phone when you don't use it - I know that for many of you this is not an option and I'm not sure if turning it off and on is even good for your battery but I heard this tip from so many people that I just had to mention it

CHECK SIM-LOCK

Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check this because they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you bought your phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that they both transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dual band" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so they lock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone is locked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or you can ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.

This is how to check the status of the 4 different locks. Aslo don't try entering the wrong number, because after 3 times it will block the phone for good.

There are 4 different locks on your Nokia phone.

COUNTRY-LOCK

NETWORK-LOCK

PROVIDER-LOCK

SIMCARD-LOCK

The code to read out the sim-lock status of your phone is

#PW+(MASTERCODE)+(Y)#

# = DOUBLE-CROSS

W = PRESS "*" THREE TIMES

P = PRESS "*" FOUR TIMES

+ = PRESS "*" TWO TIMES

MASTERCODE = 1234567890

Y = NUMBER 1 TO 4

The master code is a secret code. The code has 10 digits, To read out the sim-lock status you can enter every combination you want!

"Y" Shows the status of the network-lock. Here you can enter a number from "1" to "4". The "4" is for the sim-card lock.

N95 GPS tips from Nokia support

*************** In N95 the GPS receiver is located in the bottom of the device, below the numeric keyboard. When using the receiver, slide the numeric keypad open and hold the device upright in your hand at an angle of about 45 degrees, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure, that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver. Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. Establishing a GPS connection in the car may take longer.

If your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following: - If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal. - If the numeric keypad slide is closed, open it. - If you are outdoors, move to a more open space. - Check that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver of your device. - If the weather conditions are bad, in such a case the signal strength may also be affected. - Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. - Avoid to use screen saver when GPS connection is establishing.

NOTE: The GPS receiver takes its power from the battery. Using the GPS receiver may drain the battery faster.

Saving battery power in WiFi mode in N95

The N95 initially comes with its WiFi power set to a whopping 100mW. That is going to chew some serious battery power if you use WiFi mode extensively.

Why not give this a try and set your WiFi power to 10mW

Tools - Settings - Connection - Wireless Lan - Options - Change - Yes - Options - Advanced Settings - Yes Then scroll down to Tx power level and select 10 mW

The dreaded "can't validate certificate online" error message N95

If you have seen this error message on your N95, there is a solution. Try this:

Tools -> Settings -> Applications -> App. Manager -> Online Certificate check -> off

That should get rid of the error when trying to install/register programs.
