Making Sure You Buy Only Non Conflict Diamonds
70
The ordinary consumer is now becoming aware of the problems in the diamond industry in many parts of the world through TV news coverage and online news sites. The world has become a smaller place and consumers realize that even though they are far removed from these areas of conflict they can still do their part to try to bring peace to the world and help make the lives of those working in diamond mines much better.
This is because there are countries of the world, especially those of Africa, where the diamond industry is a very lucrative source of funding for activities that cause bloodshed, such as in Civil Wars and genocide. For this reason, a Kimberley Process report must accompany any imported diamonds to confirm that they are non conflict diamonds.
While people still want to buy best value diamonds, they are now asking more questions about the origin of the diamonds to ensure that it hasn’t come from one of the locations designated as being areas of conflict where the sale of diamonds is used to cause bloodshed and suffering. Since 2003, due to the efforts of governments in the Western World, the UN has regulations on the exporting of diamonds across borders of the world.
The countries of the world most known for the trade in conflict diamonds are Sierra Leone, Angola, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. When you ask about where the diamond you want to buy came from, if one of these areas is mentioned then you know that it is not a non conflict diamond and no matter what the price, you should walk away from the sale.
One of the reasons that diamond resellers are offering money back guarantee diamonds is that they know theirs are non conflict diamonds, and have no problems being able to show the Kimberley Process certificate to prove it.
If you should purchase a diamond in this manner, you can receive a full refund within the time frame specified in the sale if you find that it has come from one of the countries designated by the UN as ones that profit illegally from the sale of diamonds.
There is still a problem though in determining whether or not diamonds are non conflict diamonds. The stones that come from Liberia and the Ivory Coast are being brought to the market as non conflict diamonds and efforts are under way to correct this mistake. South African countries that do have a legitimate trade in diamonds are working with the UN to make sure only the diamonds from conflict free areas are allowed to be exported.
The Kimberley Process report, which must accompany all diamonds that cross borders, is a document used to track the mining and the sale of rough diamonds. The stones must be transported in containers that are tamper-proof and provide details about their country of origin.
There is also a problem in that there are still countries who haven’t become involved in this program and it is up to the jewelry store to determine whether it is a non conflict diamond. For this reason, the US will only permit diamonds to be brought into the country from certain areas of the world.
It is very hard for the ordinary jewelry store to certify that the diamonds sold are actually non conflict diamonds because they buy the stones from wholesalers. It is the wholesaler who must show the Kimberley Process report. If consumers start demanding proof that they are buying non conflict diamonds then they can do their part in bringing the state of the industry to the attention of the middle man so that these retail locations will start asking questions about the origin of the diamond.
