Non-Profit Grants
68Helping non-profits helps our communities
The John R. Oishei Foundation recently provided a $1.2 million boost to Meals on Wheels of Western New York. In addition to funding the program's familiar hot meal home-delivery service for elderly and specials needs folks, the grant money will be used to build a brand-new commissary facility. This facility will serve the Buffalo community as a meal preparation and serving base, a disaster relief site, a training facility for local college students involved in various nutrition programs, and a public space for community events. The Oishei Foundation is just one of tens of thousands of foundations and philanthropic groups dedicated to helping fund nonprofit and community aid programs and services. Many of these groups are state or city-specific, and Silver State Holding has several huge databases to match your program with the best possible funding source.
“It is our hope and expectation that the new Commissary will provide a venue through which new collaborations can be formed to better serve the region and improved efficiencies established to strengthen food preparation and service delivery throughout the Western New York region,” Oishei Foundation President Robert Gioia said.
Walmart funds community renovations
Even large corporations like Wal-mart understand the importanceof conservation and sustainability, which is shown by them granting $550,000 from the Wal-mart Foundation to six non-profit organizations that had recently worked with the mayor on the Conservation Corps partnership in Long Beach. The grants will be allocated to projects like weatherization, solar paneling, land that is more drought resistant and recycling. There is a total of six in all, but the the four mentioned are the primary concerns as of now. They plan to add two more supervisors and 20 at-risk youth to be trained in conservation methods, hoping they will spread the influence to many more. With the recession as strong as ever, many wondered why Wal-mart would donate so much, but the question was easily answered by Wal-mart's Vice President and Regional Manager Kim Sentovich,"We feel it is our job as one of the larger corporations to set the example for other companies to make sure they understand good and profitable business is not opposite of sustainability and green practices."
"This grant is 10 times more important during the recession," said executive director and CEO of the Conservation Corps in Long Beach, Mike Bassett. "We haven't been able to do weatherization for a while and now we can."
