Catch a fish without a rod and reel-Use your Noodle

How to Catch Tons of Catfish

Head out for Some Fishing Fun

When you live on the lake like I do, you can find lots of things to entertain yourself with in the summer. There is one pastime that I have started to enjoy in the summer months. This hobby is noodle fishing. The kids also love noodle fishing. My children love to go out and throw out the noodles and wait for the catch. We just grab our noodles, get on the boat and head out for some fishing fun.

What you will Need to Noodle Fish

Noodle fishing is entertaining and you can catch tons of catfish. This hobby will not cost you a lot of money and will guarantee you to catch some catfish. All that is required is a boat, some noodles (the things that your kids play with in the swimming pool), fishing line, a Sharpie, Nylon rope, fish hooks, metal clothes hangers, lead weights, and some bait.

What Kind of Bait to Use

As far as the bait goes, when catching catfish, I have learned that they will eat anything. You can seize a hefty catfish by using minnows, Shad, worms, cheese, bread, or chicken livers. I have even caught a catfish with a cheese puff.

How to assemble a Noodle

Assembling a noodle is pretty simple, however, it may be a little time consuming the first time you make your noodles. When you plan to set out on your venture, be sure to put your noodles together the day before. On a positive note, once you make the noodles, you can reuse them over and over again; unless the whopper fish carries one away and you never find that one. Here are the instructions on how to build a noodle:

1. Take your noodles and cut them in 18 inch sections

2. Take a Sharpie and Number all of your noodles

3. Take a metal wire clothes hanger cut the top out of it, fold hanger in the middle, slide it through the hole in the middle of noodle, slide it over top of noodle on one end and bend it down

4. Take reflective tap and wrap around of clothes hanger to hold down the part that is bent over

5. Take nylon rope and attach to the opposite end of where you tied down the hanger

6. attach a large weight to the end of the rope

7. Attach a hook to the end of rope

Tip: If you use reflective tap and do night fishing, it will help you spot the noodles easier. You can install a bell on each end of the noodle to ring when the fish latches on.

Throwing out the Noodles

After you have all of your noodles assembled, you are ready to head out and catch your catfish. Go to a spot in the center of the lake where you know the water is deep. Put your bait on the hook and unroll the string. Next, toss the noodle out into the lake. Go to the next noodle and do the same thing. Make sure you move around the area of the lake, but try to keep your noodles separated, but in a circle around your boat. After you throw all of your noodles in, pull your boat a short distance down stream from them and wait for some action.

Bringing in the Goods

Now all you have to do is bring in the goods. You are sitting in your boat and are watching your noodles. In a few minutes you will see the noodles start to move around. Do not go and get your noodle yet. The fish is just playing with the bait. You want to wait until you see the noodle stand straight up and go completely under water. This is where the excitement begins. The noodle will start bobbing up and down and the fish will start dragging the noodle around the lake. At this point you may have 2 or 3 noodles with fish on them. Therefore, you drive up to the noodle, grab it and pull your fish onto the boat. Next, re-bait your hook and toss it out again. At the end of the day, you will have caught a mess of fish to be cleaned. Heck, you may even have enough to invite over a slew of friends and have a fish fry.

Catfishing is a ball. I have done my share of threading hooks through chicken livers and enjoying the time on the banks of Rend Lake in southern Illinois. Thanks for sharing your story.

I really enjoy noodle fishing the best way to use chicken livers is to put them inside a piece of panty hose this way they do not fall to pieces.

I had heard of this before but I thought it was just a joke. I would not want to do this, there is more than just fish in that water.

I thought I was going to be reading about the other kind of noodle fishing. The kind where you go sticking your hand under rocks, to try to get a big catfish to bite, so you can pull him out. This sounds much more to my liking!
