The Norwegian Buhund The Breed that Deserves to be Better Known

The Norwegian Buhund is a herding dog and also known as the "Norsk Buhund". Breeders have demonstrated a commendably strong interest in promoting the versatility and wide range of talents of the Norwegian Buhund.

The breed is light framed built, with a short, neat body and features which are free from exaggeration. This makes them an ideally sized and tempered pet. A Norwegian grave-find from the Viking-age shows, that spitz dogs of Buhund type were and still are, common on farms throughout Norway. These dogs have been bred for working and don't they just love it too when you watch them.

If trained correctly they can be very obedient, although you will have to be very dedicated to achieve success with Buhunds if you intend to do Obedience work seriously. Likewise, while a Buhund will be quite happy to live part of his day in a kennel and run, if he does not receive sufficient attention he will simply bark at anything and nothing.

The propensity for this breed to bark is a disadvantage to some with a house close to neighbours, but these dogs are so readily trainable that with suitable incentives this can be controlled. If you have already decided that the Norwegian Buhund is the dog for you, it may be because you know somebody who owns one, in which case you should already have a good idea of the type of dog you would be buying.

Some other breeds have big hereditary problems but this breed has mercifully only really one, and that is a problem of cataracts in a very few animals.

The breed has since become established in other European countries and in Australia and North America. The written standard for the breed says: "The Norwegian Buhund is a typical spitz dog of middle size, lightly built, with a short, compact body, fairly smooth coat, stiff, pointed ears, tail carried curled over its back, and with a courageious, lively nature.

This account accords with the kind of work done by the "hunting" dog of the Scottish Highlands, as well as with the work done by the herding dogs of Iceland and other northern islands settled by the Vikings. If you have ever owned a breed which has been aggressive, the Buhund is the antidote to return your faith in the loving nature of the dog! We recommend this great breed.

This breed comes recommended for many reasons, but we would like to highlight the particular fact that a person who is small, and not very strong, will find this breed their a great choice because with the buhund being a smaller dog these people will be able to restrain and control them.

Dog Gets a Toddler's Kiss plus some Dribble!

The Buhund, my mother's, is clearly quite concerned what the toddler will do. In fact she was just about to kiss the dog's nose! However, this lovely dog was always so gentle, and my daughter went on to become a great animal lover...
