Not All Trees Are Created Equal

I hate that light in my eye!

My Last Summer House

It is much too cold for the summer house now.
It is much too cold for the summer house now.

What Tree Is The Best Depends On Your Needs.

I am a native of a climate that is not only extreme when it comes to weather conditions, but it can be brutal for those who spend 99.9 % of their life in the outdoors. Hot, humid Summers and bitter cold Winters are just the half of it. Autumns that can range from hot and wet to cold and dry, Springs that can leave us with snow on the ground or make you want to find the closest swimming hole, are examples of what can be expected from the seasons in my part of the country.

Weather around these parts is contrary and unreliable to say the least. That is why I know that not all trees are created equal. You see, I live in the trees and I know that some trees have great advantages over other trees when it comes to the housing market.

It would be great if i could settle in to one tree and stay for all time but that is not the case. I have to go with the flow and that means picking a tree that will accommodate me during the particular weather conditions I am experiencing. There are times when I must move from one tree to another in the same day and then move again the next day. It is a pain in my tail quills when the temperature and the humidity go roller coaster riding. Drastic change is much too rapid for my liking.

Ah, but I am an animal and God created my spirit to handle the elements with wise consideration.

Special Uses

Eastern redcedar is important to wildlife. As an evergreen, it provides good nesting and roosting cover for many birds (18,39). Dense thickets provide good escape cover for deer, and the abundant foliage, although low in quality, provides emergency food for them during times of stress. Fruits are high in crude fat and crude fiber, moderate in calcium, and very high in total carbohydrates. Eastern redcedar fruits are eaten by many wildlife species, including waxwings, bobwhite, quail, ruffed grouse, pheasant, wild turkeys, rabbits, foxes, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and coyotes (20).

Junipers For Shelter And Food

The Eastern Redcedar Juniper has got to be one of the best shelters for many critters in the Animal Kingdom. These trees will get real big and need a lot of space to spread their limbs and rise high toward the sky. They are very hardy and can be found throughout the USA. Animals can harbor up under or inside the branches and survive cold winters and snowy conditions. They also provide food for many of my forest friends. It is shameful to ever cut down such a wonderful tree.

Planting Trees To Attract The Wildlife

There is a push for the Humans to remember that the wildlife is a necessary element of the social universe. I wanted to tell you to plant vegetation that will not only attract critters but, it will also help them thrive, survive and reproduce.

This plug is going to get me some mouth watering, Cranberry Nut Bread, I just know it!

A program called Back Yard Habitats is a good place to start if you are feeling me now.

You can have your very own certifiable back yard habitat for wildlife and be a proud contributor to a wonderful cause....

Conveniently Located Near My Favorite " HOT SPOT" Is This Remarkable Man Made Geyser

Convenience is a custom in the Animal Kingdom. We animals are masters at taking advantage of our native surroundings.

Ice Storms And Snow

Last night I moved to a temporary shelter because there was talk of a Winter Storm coming this way. The birds were chirping about the possibilities of ICE. That makes for difficult climbing so I decided it would be wise to hunker down.

I know a place that is perfect for such conditions. It is close to the ground, water and food and the joint is quite spacious and cozy. I took a picture just before retiring this morning. Some of the HUMANS on HubPages have become interested in where I live and what I do to survive the elements. So here is my favorite place to stay when the weather gets ugly.

Another great thing about this location is that it provides room for me and my lady friends to take advantage of the privacy included. We like our intimate times to be just that.

There is this guy snooping around the country trying to get a look at what we like to do in the privacy of our own love dens.....

I TELL YOU SOME PEOPLE...

Thank God that he has moved on to another location, what a pest! Here is a link if you are interested in what he has found out about our best kept secret.

High in the branches of this Cottonwood Tree I can sleep all day, and wait for the sun to go down. The perfect place to nest after the cotton stops blowing.

Large Trees For Summer Fun

Big Oaks and Cottonwoods are my favorite pick for summer fun. I love the Oaks because they are majestic and I love the Cottonwoods because they can mark water from a good long distance.

I would not suggest you put a Cottonwood close to the house though. In fact, I would leave the Cottonwood plantings to Miss Mother Nature.

She knows that they will thrive near water and not to put them close to HUMANS. They will mess up sidewalks and swimming pools and all the house screens with the cotton they blow. They will shed all over the place and they drop small branches at the least change in weather.

There is a place for all living creatures and Cottonwoods belong near the water, in the woods and fields.

As For The Oaks

I love them all.

The Oak Trees are sturdy and easy for me to climb. I can lay around all day and nobody notices my sleeping body, nestled in the branches high above the forest floor. They provide a great source of food throughout the Summer and in to the Winter months as well.

It is not uncommon for me to consume large paws full of acorns picked fresh from the branches while they are still young and tender.

Come fall the acorns fall to the ground. There they provide food on the go as they are strewn across the forest floor waiting to find their way into a crevice where they can sprout and grow. I ate them often while on the run you see.

Fruits And Berries In Trees

Not adequate for housing but marvelous for food sources. There are many varieties of trees that produce a bountiful supply of food for all of God's children. I like most fruits but make sure to keep a distance when the fruits start to ripen and during the flowering season of Spring. The BEES.

Oh My Land, those bees and all that buzzing. You can hardly get a good days sleep when they are out and about. Thank you God for making those critters navigate by the light of day.

Catch that link and study up on what the light does for their ability to find their way. It is actually very cool but it does not make me like the light any better.

Trees For All Reasons And Seasons

There you see now, not all trees are equal but there is a place for each and all. I have my favorites as I said and I told you why. There is something I would like to note.

I HATE those trees that are planted in small earth squares surrounded by pavement. You know the ones I am speaking of?

Maybe it is all because of an old girlfriend. She brought disgrace to some of us with her nightly antics. It wasn't long, before she too, found the effects of humiliation, when some wise-guy, Human managed to shoot this video and plaster it all over the Internet for.... The ENTIRE WORLD TO VIEW.

Honestly I had to kick her to the curb (pun intended), because I am on the timid side, not liking to draw too much attention to my exact location. She was a striking beauty, that girl had a snout on her, to match no other. How it hurt to cut the tie.....I did not eat for 2 minutes because of her. I almost lost weight too.... A really close call

Ah Love,

win some and lose some. I always say, ....

It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all!

Wow, thank you for this beautiful Hub. Procupines do not live in Croatia, so I have for first time seen one. You are so inspirative. nature is so inspirative. Many thanks for sharing your love for wild nature and educate humanity on such charming way. Be always blessed for that.

Tatjana...I will assume the light is a Christmas Light that is used at night, we porcpines do not care for the daylight, or maybe I have jumped to quickly. You are speaking of the light of LOVE?

So sorry, You are the beauty I left the warm, mushy thoughts of on my other hub...beautiful hair made me do it. Thanks for reading my work and commenting.

Very funny and yet so educational, here in LA we got a a bunch of transplant trees and I don't know if any are actually native or what their names are, but if we got raccoons and coyotes on the loose, so I'm sure its okay for the porcupine.

I always try to keep a large, passive, compost pile in the far back corner of my yard for some animals to find shelter in during the winter months. Last year I am sure that a rabbit used the area. In fact I think it has been used by rabbits for a couple of years.

I also know that several different kinds of animals eat some of the food I toss on the pile. That always makes me feel good though I do not care to encourage the mice. I do feel that they can have there space as long as they stay OUTSIDE.

poorQpine,

I love your world and all the informative links you have provided for us who live on the ground, or at least use the stairs to get up high :). If I were to live in a tree I think I would choose an oak because I grew up with these and I love acorns in the fall. Actually I still have some acorns I was going to use in an art project, but I might need to put these back out in nature or they will get worms.

Hi PoorQpine! I once watched traffic stop on both sides of the highway to watch a porcupine cross the road. I poked my head out the window and was laughing and he/she stopped, stared at me and the quills went up, then it waddled off across the road. Musta took him/her about 20 mins, lol. They are beautiful and I love the wild critters in my neck of the woods too. Beautiful hub indeed!

SweetiePie....There you go.I wrote this Hub with you special in my mind. I am so excited that you love the oaks too. I have seen where some Humans built a castle in an oak tree. That was several years ago, when I was but a wee porcupette. My Mum showed it to me, she did. She made it a rule to always keep a long distance from the place.

Mum said these kinds of castles were dangerous for all living creatures except for HUMANS. Then she insisted we go look inside one night as a part of my education. It was a very frightening experience for tiny me, poorQpine. My tail quills shiver to this day as I reminisce.

I must say that I was shocked to find the castle was well equipped for WAR. Inside there were many kinds of weapons. It was some education. I learned about what Mum called a SLINGSHOT, a bucket full of small round rocks, there was a gun Mum dubbed a BB but,

to this day I have no idea what that is? Do you know about BB?

There were big blankets with zippers sewn in and a table with Cigarettes, Arrows and a Bow hung on an inside limb. There were a lot of inside limbs with all kinds of stuff hanging from them....I know about the Bow and Arrows because I saw the horrible device used to take down a friend just two years ago. That is a story that is so heartbreaking, I can never tell it in length without ending in a bubbling babble. Not today, maybe I can tell you another time.

Best you eat the acorns you have, for energy you see. They are quite tasty as a late night snack. Do not concern yourself with the worms inside. That is like adding butter to a biscuit!

Ah my LOVELY countrywomen....to relocate at my ripe old age would be too much. You see I am set in my ways and could never leave for all the wonderful ladies who would die from broken hearts.

You did not know that I am needed here?

Brazil is much too hot for my liking as well.
