Notre Dame Cathedral Paris - Joan of Arc, the Hunchback and Architecture Perfection

The Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the oldest and most imposing cathedrals in all of France. Its construction began in the 12th century and was finished some 200 years later. While it is primarily of French Gothic architecture style, it was also influenced by the changes over its 200 year construction period which included the times of Renaissance and Naturalism. Part of the charm of this beautiful structure besides it's unique beauty and fascinating architecture is its strength considering its many centuries of survival.

The Cathedral did incur substantial damage during the French Revolution from plundering and violence. Many statues were decapitated and the heads buried, but talented architects (Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus and Eugene Viollet-le-Duc) oversaw a restoration program which brought the Cathedral back to form. This must-see Paris attraction has witnessed quite a few important ceremonies both for Christianity and for the world. Because of that, people of all faiths have this famous attraction at the top of their Paris lists.

One story, particularly popular world wide is that of Joan of Arc. She was a simple peasant girl now entrenched in the history books of France for her bravery and special relationship with god. This special lady had spiritual and character richness even though she had no material wealth. Through her courage, she helped France in major battles against the English troops. While using the wise military tactics of Joan of Arc, the well known heroine, France won many battles against England. She also was a great supporter of the monarchy; she is indirectly the reason why Charles VII was given his crown. However, sadly, Joan of Arc was captured by the Burundians’, was accused of heresy and was burned at the stake.

Only years later, after her death on the 7th of July 1456, was Joan of Arc was cleared of the charges and declared innocent and a martyr of France. In 1909 she was beatified in the famous Notre Dame cathedral of Paris by Pope Pius X.

The Notre Dame Cathedral, national heroine aside, also has a rich treasury consisting of paintings, furniture and other precious pieces of Neo-Gothic design. For a small entrance fee, tourists can tour and see these items. Attending a mass at the Cathedral is free of charge. Five times per day Masses are held and many Christians are in attendance.

Another nice thing about the Notre Dame Cathedral Paris is the presence of the beautiful surrounding Parisian Hotels which all have views of the special church.

Stories are almost always associated with famous buildings. And as it goes, a legend is told of the Cathedral, which fascinates people. In this case, it is the worldwide story of the hunchback of Notre Dame who has become the inspiration of movies and cartoons. Stories abounding from this important piece of history, I think the most deserving reason for fame of this Cathedral is its French Gothic architecture, an example of architecture perfection.
