Nurseries are not just about picking animal print themes

Though this can be the fun part....

Kid-Sized Spaces....

Child Spaces

Although hundreds of babies are being born every day, several every minute, it's not every baby that gets to stay in a really cool room.

So here are a few ideas for nurseries.

One thing to think about is the child cave - a thing Christopher Alexander noticed back in the 70's in his book 'A Pattern Language.'

'children love to be in tiny, cave-like spaces'

If you think back, you can probably remember making some hid-away place where you could retreat from the grown-up world and do your own thing.

'They are trying to carve out a place that is kid size.'

So why not make a 'cave' for a child - as they probably will make one anyway. Places where the ceiling comes down low are excellent. Bunk beds with curtains are good, spaces under desks are also prime cave positions.

Getting Creative with your Nursery Walls

Child's realm

Another interesting point Christopher Alexander makes is the 'children's realm.' Children often play in a broad band from the back yard to the front door.

So when you take this into account, it makes sense to place the quiet kid-free spaces off this route. Places like your study, or bedroom, or any quiet place you might want to relax in.

Kids will always be using spaces like hallways, bathrooms and kitchens. By placing your study and quiet space off this beaten track, you provide space for kids to play naturally, and still have the luxury of your own space.

Cool Color Retro Nursery

Colors in Nurseries

Color schemes are great.

You can change them fairly easily and they add a lot of character to a space.

The links below map out some of the basic color rules. These are made to be broken, I'd just recommend (especially for painting walls) trying out a test spot before committing to painting a whole room.

Often a small color swatch of paint appears quite subtle - until you paint a whole wall with it.

So have fun with color. And if a color scheme turns pear shaped, don't stress it - you can always paint over it.
