Birth control isn't a guarantee!
Birth control isn't a guarantee!

Where'd You Go Aunt Flo??

Not too long ago, I experienced what one might call a pregnancy 'scare'...Now, bear in mind, i am a happily married woman with two young boys (2 and 10 months)...so a pregnancy scare for me is not the same as it would be for, say, a 16 year old high school student or a nun...

Nonetheless, my tale may be beneficial to some...

I am currently taking a birth control pill called "Yasmin"...I have tried several, but after my second son, I found Yasmin to be the best for me....but I'm here to tell you that birth control pills are not always effective, even when you take them exactly as you should.

Since starting a birth control regimen (before having kids and up to now) I have been 'pregnant' 5 times...that's right...FIVE times...I have had 3 miscarriages, all of which occured while taking the pill. Now, while that seems tragic, perhaps more tragic than the miscarriages is the fact that it was THAT easy for me to become pregnant on the pill.

As much as I'd like to think I'm just super fertile or my husband has "super swimmers", I can't truly believe that's the case.

So, if you miss your period, don't think that just because you're on the pill, that you're safe. The reason I'm writing this hub is because I missed my period for two months...every pregnancy test told me I wasn't pregnant, but I still made a doctor's appointment. The night before I was to go have a blood test, Aunt Flo made her visit.

I just kept thinking "this cannot be happening again"...So - in an effort to enlighten women who may be in the same boat, I've compiled a "WHAT NOW" hub...

How can you guarantee your birth control is effective?

You can't, at least not 100%. But, by trying several different kinds under the direction of your doctor, you can find the best one for your physiology.

Today, the range of birth controls is expanded...the patch, the pill, the shot, the insert...the list goes on and on. You may have never considered any of the other options, but it's worth looking into. Why? because not every birth control will work for everybody.

You shouldn't approach your birth control willy nilly...talk to your doctor (or the clinic representative if you go to public health facilities). It's serious business. Birth control can really mess with your hormones causing everything from acne to "roid rage".

And I think we can all agree that leaving it to chance, or leaving it to the man is not the best idea ;)

If you're certain you no longer want children, you should consider a more permanent solution such as a tubal ligation. However, if this is the route you plan to go, medically speaking, a vasectomy for your partner is a less invasive approach.

Be sure and discuss your desires and concerns with your partner...

And, if you're like me, you can leave the rest to God...In my opinion, if He wants me to have another one, no amount of progesterone in pill form is going to keep that from happening.

Very informative hub.

The vasectomy is actually also easier to reverse than the tubal if that is the choice that one makes!

It is additionally noteworthy that certain forms of birth control (Depo Provera most significantly) can cause serious long-term effects that might not be desired. I have known women who have become infertile due to the shot!
