Ooty Boat House Lake


In South India there are many beautiful hill stations to stay and enjoy. Ooty is the most beautiful one and proudly called as The Queen of Hills. It is lying on the folded mountains of high ranges of Western Ghats at an altitude of 2,250 metres from msl and it is also the junction point of Western and Eastern Ghats. Its total area is about 36 sq. km. It is the capital town of Nilgris District of Tamil Nadu. Ooty receives annual rainfall of 121 cm. There are many places of interest in Ooty. Every year thousands of tourists visit here from domestic and foreign countries. Before reaching Ooty we have to come across another hill station called Connoor which is also enjoyable hill station with many scenic spots such as Sims Park.

Ooty Boat House Lake, Ooty Children's Park, Dodda Betta, Ooty Botanical Garden, Avalanche and Pykara are some of the interesting places to visit there.

Ooty Boat House Lake

Though the name of the lake is Ooty Boat House Lake, the people called it as Ooty Lake. The British ruler called John Sullivan has constucted this beautiful lake in the year 1823 -1825. This is covered by beautiful green woods and it has a boat house for hiring boats to enjoy boat riding in the lake.

Ooty Children's Park

At the eastern end of the lake the children's park is situated where children can enjoy many choices of playing equipments. It is one of the main attraction of Ooty especially for children.

Ooty Botanical Garden

This beautiful garden is the huge collection of flora and formed by Mr. McClover during the year 1857-1867. We can enjoy hundreds of variety of beautiful flowers and cut plants which are carefully maintained. At the centre point of the park there is a glass house which contains hundreds of variety of rare plants and flowers. Words to be found to describe the beauty of this wonderful park. There are many places inside the park to get some relax.

Pykara

This is the name of the river which flows in the district. Todas, old tribals, living there beleive it as Holy one and worshipping it. It will be very beautiful to look at the river which flows along the grassy slope of the Nilgris Hills.


Avalanche

Located at a distance of 25 km from Ooty. It is a wonderful place that should not be missed. The Dam called Canada Dam can be seen here. A good experience of trekking can be had here.

Dodda Betta

This is the second highest peak of Western Ghats and the highest point of Ooty. In Nilgris plateau it runs north-south. The altitude of Dodda Betta is 2636 m from msl. There will be a telescope house there to watch some adjacent points of Ooty which are lying below there.

The Climate of Ooty

April and May are only favorable months to enjoy the climate of Ooty. In summer days max. temperature is 25 degree centigrade and min. is 12 degree centigrade. But in winter days minimum temperature goes down zero degree centigrade. Ooty experiences heavy rains from both monsoons. South-west monsoon starts on June first week and continues till the end of month September and North-East Monsoon starts on the first week of October and ends on the end of November. December, January, Febrauary are peak season of winter.

Getting There

The nearest air port is Coimbatore. All the people should not miss the travelling by train to arrive Ooty which runs through many number of tunnels and amazing thick forests and cascades.
