Natural Flavor. I always like the way pet food companies hide the use of manure in the ingredients. Natural flavor is made from the manure of the animal the pet food company wants the pet food to taste like.
Chicken Fat. Is used to encourage a pet to eat a product which the pet would not normally eat. We do not know the history of the chicken fat and how it was cared for before being included in your pet's food.
I am pleased Orijen does not use corn, wheat, or soy. We should probably take time out from this review to remind ourselves of the good and bad effects of corn, wheat, and soy in a cat or dog's diet. *Corn, wheat and soy are responsible for fever, ear aches, ear infections, bad bread, dental disease, hair loss, dry and itchy skin, bloat, tumors, warts, moles, abnormal nail growth, arthritis, deafness, blindness, digestive problems, seizures, inflamed liver, inflamed kidneys, bladder problems, heart problems, and death. Oh yeah, for the good effects of these three grains - reduces the cost of pet food production.
This flavor and style of Orijen pet food I consider to be a fairly healthy choice in pet foods. - Susan Peters

Coheed,
You are correct. I'll revise this review.
Thank you!
Susan
I purchased this food under the assumption that it's soy, wheat and corn free. Well, it's not! If you look on the label it states "zea mays". Unfortunately, "zea mays" is corn. Corn. I cannot believe it. I am so disappointed. My vet pointed this out to me while trying to convince me that Orijen is unhealthy and that I should be feeding them either Hill's, Royal Canin, or Medi. This is all so confusing.
What the HECK to I feed my kittens!!!????
I emailed the company and they stated that it is Corn Silk and not Corn. Apparently Corn Silk has been used as an herbal remedy for urinary conditions. Has anyone ever heard of this?
Orijen cat food has been recalled in Australia due to high irradiation levels, which have sickened and killed cats there. Australia apparently requires pet food producers who do not cook their foods at a certain high temperature to irradiate their foods upon delivery to Australia. Champion Pet Foods says this problem (and the recall) only affects Australia. Details here: http://www.championpetfoods.com/
It was recalled for the opposite reason i believe. Austraila started requiring pet foods to be irradiated due to pet food scare while Orijen did not want to irradiate their food leading to the recall. The recall wasn't because the Orijen food was tainted or bad. As far as the Zea Mays, this is answered in their FAQ:
A: The Zea Mays in ORIJEN is CORN SILK which is actually classified as an herb or botanical – not a grain. Corn Silk is NOT made from grain but rather from filaments from the flowers of female corn plant. This costly botanical features Maizenic Acid as an active ingredient and is formulated in ORIJEN diets at 300mg/kg. As corn silk does not contain corn starch or corn protein it poses absolutely no risk to dogs that may have corn allergies.
Corn silk is used to treat urinary tract infections and kidney stones and is regarded as a soothing diuretic useful for any irritation of the urinary system (a common health problem in today’s companion dogs and cats). As corn silk is used as a kidney remedy and in the regulation of fluids, this herb is believed to be helpful in treating high blood pressure and water retention.
As a well known herbal remedy, corn silk is used to treat urinary conditions in countries including the United Sates, China, Haiti, Turkey, and Trinidad. Furthermore, in China, corn silk as a component in an herbal formula is used to treat diabetes.
Christa,
When it comes to pet food, unfortunately, the last person you want advice from is your vet. Sound crazy? Verterinarian schools are highly funded by pet food companies which in turn train students to push their products. Vets are generally not trained in pet food nutrition and therefore should not be giving advice on pet foods to their patients. The pet foods at a veterinarian's office are almost always rated the worst. My own vet personally told me she would never recommend the garbage they sell in the office, which is Science Diet. Just look at the ingredients in this food, it should be a crime for a vet to push this crap. Because my vet admitted that to me, I feel very confident bringing my pets to her. Any vet that recommends the garbage on their shelves does not have your pet's best interest in mind. Search: "veterinarians and pet food". This is the website:
http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04/Perhach/P
Once I submit this post the whole address may not show up, if not, do the search I mentioned and it will bring you to the site. Also, if you go to: www.dogfoodanalysis.com you will find that every pet food recommendation your vet gave you is very poorly rated. I would definitely switch vets.
Hi Susan! can you also do a review of orijen 6 fresh fish for cats? I am feeding this to my cat since it seems to be a good product available here in the philippines. He seems to be healthier with it but I just want to be sure. Thanks! :)
Angel,
Hope this helps:
Orijen has won "Pet Food of the Year Award, 2009-2010"
The Pet Food of the Year is a global award presented by the Glycemic Research Institute®, for the Best Overall Healthiest Pet Food. This year, ORIJEN was selected against all other pet foods on the market. ORIJEN pet food is manufactured and owned by Champion Petfoods Ltd in Alberta, Canada (ChampionPetFoods.com).
The strict Award criteria involves in-depth analysis of the product and its suitability, based on ingredients, glycemic-response, diabetic-response, anti-aging factors, and biochemical requirements of the species.
thanks for that info :) I am really very happy with the orijen 6 fresh fish I'm feeding my cat, his coat is so much more silkier and shiny. I just wanted to be sure it is safe. :)
To Angel,
You're welcome :o) I'm happy with Orijen, too, and feed it to my two cats and two dogs. You're right in worrying about the safety of pet foods...we can never take that for granted anymore. Let's pray this one stays safe for many, many years!
