If you are looking to buy a new desk, then buying an oak desk can be a great way to give your room an extra piece of authenticity as well as providing a solid base for whatever work or computer equipment you require the desk to hold. Oak desks usually look better in more traditional homes compared with the more modern desks that you can buy today. They are also often more expensive because the wood is of a higher quality, and also heavier and more expensive to find and harvest.

In this article I'll be going through some of the common things you need to think about when buying a new oak desk whether you are buying a computer desk, an antique or a desk for a completely different purpose. Buying on a desk isn't always easy and is quite expensive and see want to make sure that you are making the right choice the first time around and not have to lift with a big desk in your house that you are not happy with.

How much do they cost?

As I said earlier in the article I've desks tend to be more expensive than other kinds of desk simply because the word is of a much better quality and hence last a lot longer. The price will also depend on what you are going to use the desk for and what you require it to do. For example if you are buying an open computer desk there needs to be big enough to hold all your equipment as well a sturdy enough to not collapse under the weight! On a side note if you are buying a desk for a computer you should make sure that you get it covered well so that it isn't scratched by the heavy computer equipment. This is especially important if you are buying an expensive oak desk for your office.

For example you can get an office oak desk on the Internet for about £300 at the exchange rate of the time of writing. This is a lot of money but it is constructing using a solid hardwood with a veneer of oak as well as having a keyboard desk so you can use it with a computer. It will also look great with the more traditional home decor but can look fantastic in nearly all environments unlike the modern computer desk which can look out of place if your house is more traditionally decorated.

Another example is the smaller executive desk which is made using warm oak. This can't be used the computer is instead better for decoration or as a dressing table in a bedroom as it isn't a sturdy. It would look great using as a decorative piece though and can be bought for just £250.

If you are looking to buy a corner a desk or even a corner oak computer desk then you will be spoilt for choice on the Internet however they don't come cheap. For example you can get a small computer desk that will fit in the corner of your room for around £300 which is a lot of money compared to the price of other computer desks that are made of a cheaper material.

Do I need anything else?

If you are buying an oak desk then it is probably a good idea to also buy oak chair to go with it. These are obviously a lot cheaper than the desk but are more expensive than other kinds of chairs that you can buy and also won't be of the computer chair type. You can get a matching oak chair for the corner desk I spoke about earlier for around £100 which isn't too bad but does add an extra significant cost to the price of what you have already bought and may be a problem for some people. Of course buying an oak chair isn’t a necessary and should you choose to go with a regular spin chair for your computer desk or a cheaper fake wood chair not many people will notice the difference, as always it is mainly ourselves who are our own harshest critics!

If you are buying an antique oak desk and you should be much more careful about buying. Make sure that you know the exact value of the item before buying it otherwise you could be in for a nasty surprise.
