Obama faces Vietnam-like Afghanistan war
55A dark hole for the United States
Obama may have inherited the unfinished war in Afghanistan from the Bush administration but now that he is making the decision, he may face resistance from his own party. He is finding out very quickly that the challenge from the Talaban can't be dealt with by making rah-rah speeches just as Lyndon Johnson found out during the Vietnam War.
Already Obama has had to order 17,000 more troops to Afghanistan to be added to the 38,000 already there. If he is required to send more or the number of casualties increases, he may find resistance from his own party, some who already think it is a lost cause, much like Vietnam in the past. It is just a matter of time before the patience of Americans begins to wear thin and the pressure to find a way out of the morass forces Obama to either send more troops or leave the country to the Talaban.
Changing commanders in the region is most likely just window dressing. Some think it is just wishful thinking or a diversion away from the reality of the situation. No matter what strategy Obama tries to use, it is already been called a "black hole" by some Republicans. If Obama thinks that stability can be brought to the area by elections, perhaps he has the wrong advisors.
The Afghanistan War begins to look more like the Vietnam War every day because fighting the Talaban is reminiscent of fighting the North Vietnamese who gradually wore down the Americans' will to keep fighting back. Like Nixon's supposed strategy for winning the war in Vietnam, Obama's strategies may begin to sound hollow as civilian casualties, a great propaganda tool for the Talaban, mount along with those of U.S. troops.O
