Ocean's Edge
73In Memory of My Mom!
My mom passed away almost 2 years ago. It has taken me this long to finally write about grieving her loss. I title this poem, Ocean's Edge, because she was given the strange nickname, OCEAN, by my father. We grew up hearing it, so used mom and ocean interchangeably. Anyone close to us kids, ended up calling my mom, Ocean. Needless to say, she was not always thrilled with a bunch of teenagers approaching and then greeting her with, "Hi Ocean!" Ocean's Edge represents the unending and deep sense of loss experienced when you lose your mom and one of your best-friends at the same time, And the slow and painful process of acceptance that gradually develops and is on-going.
Ocean's Edge
a bottomless pit
a frozen crevasse
like the still black night
the ocean's edge or
lifelong friendships-
limitless!
love for a child can never
be destroyed.
an enduring bond of soulmates
exists forever
time can't be measured
so marches on
stars can't be counted
and galaxies expand
space is continual, it
can't be grasped
The Sun
ever present
a monument
it stands
things without measure times
without end
Voices
Memories
Love Remains.
Love makes its home in the heart's
deepest places
resides though inactive
still
quiet
in solitude and pain
how joyous the memory
how deep the love
how rewarding the knowledge
of what once was
a empty place
an endless space
Yet fueled by love
Grief exists
A Beautiful Tribute.

"... love for a child can never be destroyed ..."
Exactly right. Beautiful hub, Jen
Hi Val! Thanks for taking the time to comment, especially since you have so much going on. Hope to see you around as your schedule permits.
Jess, thank you. I have learned love for a parent can never be destroyed as well. Which has comforted me.

What a very nice poem. Love is an intangible yet remains and can still be experienced in a familiar smell, a familiar place and in family even as we look in the mirror and see images of the love in the lines and smiled playing out on our own face. Your mother was obviously a loving, caring woman...I am sure she is appreciating the tribute now and how well you have poetically expressed for many others to continue to appreciate her oceanic flow in life.
Beautiful!
Hey there Sue! So nice to see you again! Thanks so much for recognizing the special relationship my mom and I had. She would be proud that I found a way to cope with her loss as she never wanted anyone crying over her. :) thanks so much for your comment. Looking forward to running into you again here on hubpages!

Wow. What a beautiful juxtaposition of words Darline. It is so hard to capture these emotions in words. You have done so, seamlessly. That you called your mom Ocean is so powerful. Like a metaphor from the beginning, her presence on the Earth... is greater than the land. You've created a life boat of emotion. Most impressive. I hope it will help you feel close to her when you read it again- so powerful what you've created here.
Kudos!

Great poem! just had an overseas talk with my mother. A poignant hub that motivated me to make poem for her. Thanks for sharing. God bless!
ladyeagle, I'm glad your mom will be able to read about your feelings for her while she is alive and well. We all tell our moms we love them, but what a great gift to write a poem just for her. I will look forward to reading it.
What an absolutely beautiful poem, Dar. You arrange your emotions beautifully, like paint on a canvas.
Katie, what a compliment, thank you so much, my friend!
